A vicious rencounter occurred in Nemaha City, on Saturday even ing last, at Bennett's saloon, between Jim Bennett and a man named Geo. Lewis, whoresidesja3t over thecoun tv line in Richardson county. We heard different ver-ions as to lhe cause of the trouble, and as a preliminary trial was waived, it is impossible to arrive at a conclusion which might not bs incorrect, and do injustice io one or the other of the parties; and as the matter will be for trial in the District Court, we shall not publish any of the stories, as. to which was to blame, or which sought or began the assault. The two men were not good friends, they having had a fight some time ago; and meeting in the saloon, and probably both being more or less intoxicated, a slight provocation led to a collision. Bennett struck Lewis in the face with his fist and Lewis used& pocket knife, cutting and stab bing Bennett in several places, only two of which are severe or considered atall dangi-roiii. These arc. e urn, across the abdomen, of several inches in length which came near disembow Iing him, and one stab in the right side, which Dr. Fo3ter, who attends the wounded man, thinks possibly touched the liver. The Dr. thinks, however, that neither of the wound? are very dangerous. The combatants were separated as soon as it could be done, and city marshal George Sutton took Lewis in charge, afterward pass ing him in charge of constable Rabe Elliott, who took him before J. P Crother, justice of the peace. The parties not being ready for trial then the justice placed Lewis under $200 bond and set the trial for Monday morning 10 o'clock. Monday morning Bennett was not able to appear but Lewis was on hand, waived an exam nation and was required to give a bond of$o00 for his appearance at district-court. The prisoner had no trouble in giving bail as he is a man of considerable wealth, and la well respected by his neighbors. Linen suits at Lowman's. In the native groves and forests in this section of the country the in sect which entomologists call the Cicada, commonly known as the 17 year locust, abound at present in great numbers, and their shrill song or sound is constantly heard through out the day. While they swarm, In spots, among the trees and bushes generally, sacking the juices of the leaves and depositing their eggs in the tender young branches, their favorite is the hickory. In comparison with the real locust, or migratory grasshop per, they are dissimilar and perfectly harmless, doing no harm to crops or in any other way, excepting among the tenderest growths of the forest, from which the tree soon recovers after their departure. We do not think they will even harm young orchards, as some fear, but will con fine themselves to the wild woods. The male cicada alone possesses the organs of sound perfectly developed. These are in no way connected with the mouth or throat, but may be des- Ortbod ac a mnaml npjiaratn?, 4 under side of the abdomen, which is very complicated, consisting of a set of membranes and fibres connected with powerful muscles. The sounds may be produced after the insect is dead, by pulling the fibres and letting them escape. Calico at Xovrnian;g.
