CHILDREN, 15ots
Are our good citizens losing their
interest in the Library and Reading
Room institution, which started out
undersuohflatteriugauspices? Some
I fear has been expressed that such is
the case, but we hope not. This is
amongst the best, if not the best, en
terprises ever started In the city for
the social aud moral good of the peo
ple generally, and its interest should
not be permitted to wane in any de
gree. Mr. Carson has kindly and be
nevolently given a hall for this use,
and It is being properly fitted up.
Chairs have been purchased In suffi
cient number for seats, arrangements
have been made for a supply of beat
books and other reading matter and
thus far everything has tendered to
ward success. But the lack of inter
est seems to be in the purchase of
memberships. Life memberships cost
only $10 ; yearly memberships, $2,50 ;
six months, $1,25; three months 75
cents. This arrangement is as cheap
as any could desire and places it with
in the power of all to become mem
bers of the association thus acquiring
the right of taking books out of the
library subject only to necessary
rules of the association at less than
five oents a -week. People in the
country should understand that this
Library association is not confined to
the city, but that they also have equal
rights. Many country people have
already purchased memberships, and
all are cordially invited to do so, and
avail themselvos of this cheap meth
od of proouringthe best reading mat
ter. The Hall whioh is over Carson's
Bank is now open, and the public is
invited to call, and be further advised
regarding the matter.

but little question that the line of rail

our predictions come true, we could
all rej ice over the fact that Beatrice,
