The Seward Reporter says the
editor recently attended a sceance at
the house of some spiritual mediums,
in the country a few miles from Sew
ard, and that notwithstanding the
sensation that had been created in
Seward in consequence of wonderful
revelations made by a little eight
year old girl, regarding the convicted
muoderer Clough, he, the editor, in
timates that he saw nor heard any
thing that went to prove to him I hat
the whole business is not a second
class fraud. The Reporter says there
were three mediums, two women and
the little girl. Each had a slate and
pencil and communicated by writing
on the slates, They were all influ
enced by the same spirit, and reveal
ed something about Clough; but one
spelled lit Clough another ClufT. and
the third one, Cluf. The . Reporter
man not understanding why the same
spirit should spell Clough and many
other common words iu so many dif
ferent ways, lie became disgusted, ap
parently with the performance.
The meeting to consider the coal
question, ak HigglnV school houso
last Saturday was a gratifying success
In every particular. The minutes of
what was done at the meeting will be
found in anothercolumn. Mr. Shook
called on us on Monday evening and
exhibited a subscription paper with
eome $200 subscribed, and informed us
that several other papers were .being
circulated and altogether between
$400 and $500 worth of shares were
taken. It is estimated by Mr. Shook
and others who are interesting them
selves in the matter, that it will be
necessary to raise at least one thou
sand dollars to successfully carry
through the enterprise of testing
thoroughly as to whether we have
paying coal beds within the county
or not. The people are stirred up on
the question, and all who are able
promptly take one or more shareB.
At least such Is the feeling exhibited
so far as the subscription papers have
circulated ; henca no doubt Is enter
tained that the requsite amount will
be eubscribed without the expendi
ture of much time or trouble Let
the good work go on.
The share owners anda!l ho de
sire to take shares and assist inany
degree in this laudable enterprise,?are
to meet atlSemabaCity next Saturday
ho organize. Let everybody turnout
'in. that-meeting.- .. "..-.--
We are sometimes outrageously
bored, and imposed on too, by the
secretaries of meetings, teacher' in
stitutes, teachers' clubs, etc. And
this is the way they do it : They
withhold, or neglect to furnish us the
minutes of their meetings until the
matter is terribly old and stale. Now
for instance, this week we publish
the proceedings ofa "TeachersC.lub"
meeting held on the twenty-sixtH" of
January, when, had the manuscript
been promptly sent us would have ap
peared in our paper on the 31st the
26th being on Friday and the paper
not coming out until the next Wed
nesday there was ample time for the
secretary to have made up his min
utes and delivered them at the print
ing office. Now it is the 15th of Feb
ruary before those old minutes come
out in print. We say most emphat
ically that this manner of doing busi
ness does not suit us, and hereafter
when secretaries eo neglect their bus
iness as we believe they do in -this
matter we will promptly stick their
minutes in the stove Instead of in the
paper.
We take pleasure In encouroging
and accommodating any laudable
thing, or any society, or club, or liter
arj' or temperance institution, by pub
lishing their proceedings, resolutions
etc., if they are furnished us while
fresh but not otherwise. Secretaries
and presidents of meetings will please
make a note of, these suggestions.

Tlic Western Rural.
With .the new. management of The
Western R ural comes marked impro
vements in that sterling Farm and
Family Weekly. It has added a Crop
and Weather Bureau so systematic as
to include every Important county in
the Northwest, from Ohio to tin1
Rocky Mountains, and surpasses the
reports made by the Agricultural De
partmental Washington, inasmuch as
they are presented fresh to the farm
ers in a condensed form eacli week
The Western Rural also has Commer
cial and Market reports unsurpassed
by any paper in the country, and is the
champion of cheap transportation null
equal justice to all classes. Combin
ing its practical information on Rural
'Affairs, with its entertaining and in
structive litarary departments, make
it the most complete' Farm and Fam
