The trial of "Waldo for the mur
der of Geo. Randall, some two years
ago near Sterling. Nebraska, took
p!ee at Pawnee City last week, and
resulted in his acquittal. After the
jury was received the district attorne3
J entered a nolle prosequi in the case of j
Mrs. Randall, widow of the we were
going to saj' murdered man who was
under indictment for the Fame crime.
On last Tuesday D. H. Ellis and
Anna Parker alias Anna Davis of
London, this county, were arrested
and brought before Judge McComas,
on four separate charges, all rather
smutty, the evidence on which cases
not being deemed of a beneficial char
acter for our modest readers we will
not publish. The charges were as fol
lows: first, The people against Ellis
and Anna Parker for producing abor
tion on Miss Anna, or murdering her
unborn child. One against Ellis for
notoriously cohabiting with Miss An
na in a state of adultery; another
against Ellis for simple adultery with
Miss Anna; and one against Anna
for adultry with Mr. Ellis. J. H.
Broady appeared as counsel for the
State and E W. Thomas for defend
ants. The Judge bound the prisoners
to appear before the District court in
sums the aggregate of which is
$1,900. They gave bail and were re
leased. Ellis and his paramour ap
peared to be very bold about their
"nest-hiding" and evidently the only
thing that hurts them is the trouble
that the law has involved them in.
Ellis is a married man of probably
fifty-five years of age, has a family of
children, some married. One of his
daughters and her husband wero wit
nesses against him. Miss Anna Da
vis alias Anna Parker is a buxom
Scarce, good fresh butter. Plen
ty, flies.
One thing the grasshoppers did'nt
tackle W. Dundas's grindstone.
Plums are getting ripe; and now,
too, the "meloucholie" days have
come, the saddest of the year.
Eev. Mr. Coryell preached to the
inhabitants of Sheridan and vicinity
on Sunday forenoon and evening.
A fine chance for a blacksmith at
Sheridan. E. E. Savage has quit
work here and the shop at present is
vacant.
An odd sight is Mr. Sage's orch
ardthe trees stripped entirely of
their leaves and the apples standing
out so boldly.
The farmers, after the fashion of
Maud Muller, are busily engaged in
"raking the meadows sweet with
hay." Owing to the drouth the yield
is small.
Wonder if the grangers are satis
fied now? There hasn't been any
middle-men fooling around, but the
corn has gone straight from the pro
ducer to the consumer.
Judge A. W. Morgan and family
moved Into the hotel building last
week. Mr. Reed also moved to town
a few days ago, and will resume work
on -his building immediately.

ger beer, and has just received fifty
kegs of Beyschlag's pure lager, one
year old, which he proposes to sell at
five cents a glass if he don't make a

We will give one item of testimony
which will give a good idea of how
matters were carried on about the El
lis house. The old lady said her hus
band, when he didn't want to be in
terrupted, would put her in a room
and lock her up, and then retire with
Miss Anne, (who lived at Ellis's
house) to another room and lock
themselves in, and much of the time
occupied tiie same bed together all
night. The old lady was kept quiet
all this time through dread of the
kicks and blows administered from
time to time by her husband.
