.V& AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH.
The following singular poem, from Mr.
Tllton, written1 at tire time of Ills troubles,
lias JTBlngulnr interest now:
Slit MARMADUKE'S MUSINGS.
I won n noble fame.
Hut. -with n. sudden frown,
The people snatched my crown,
And In the mire trod down
yty lofty name.
I bore a bounteous purse,
And beggars by the way
Then blessed mo day by day.
But I, grown poor as they,
Ilave naw their curse;
i gained what men call friends.
But now their love Is hate,
And 1 have learned too late
How mated minds unmate.
And friendship ends,
I clasped a woman's breast,
As If her heart I knew.
Or fancied, would be true,
Who proved alas ! she, too
False like the rest.
I now am all bereft
As when some tower doth f.xll,
"With battlements and wall
And gat and bridge and all
And nothing left.
lint I account It worth
All pangs of fair hopes crossed
All loves and honor lost
To gain the heavens at cost
Of losing earth.
So, lest I be Inclined
To render 111 for III
Henceforth in me Instill
O God, a swoet good will
To all mankind.
Klccj' IJollow. Nw. 1, 1671.
From the Indiana Farmer.
ICEKP THE GRANGE PURE.
The grange was organized to im
prove the conditions of ogrloulture,
disseminate knowledge on practical
subjects, oultlvato and develop' the
resources of our country and elevate
the conditions of all laboring classes.
This Order has grown with unprece
dented vigor, till it is a great power in
the nation, and here is the.danger. It
is only too true of mankind that the
possession of great power generally
involves a dispostion to wield it with
intolerance, which often results in
fanatiticism and tyranny. Still more
so is this true when the acquisition
of power has been sudden, and fall
Into experienced hands not accustom
to the great responsibilities. While
this organization includes men of
great capabilities, yet it would indeed
be strange if did not number among
its vast membership men of question
able oharaoter. Such are the faots.
Some of the members are now asking
the grave question :
"How shall the Order be kept
pure?" Reports of defalcations and
scandalous stories have found lodg
ment in this organization. The New
York World says that in almost all
the States most thoroughly identified
with the grange move ment, scandals
have been started, and that iuvaria-
bly the officers and the organs of this
Order, inotead o laying bare; the full-
est extent, the Irregulartlco, lmvo en
deavored to cover up the circumstau
cea with a veil of Ira'ponotrnblo mys
glving as as a reason why the grange
is a secret organization, and that
there is nonnecessity of giving to the
public the Inside workings of the Or
der. It has been alleged that the
Iowa grange has member who have
received large profits from commer
cial transactions in the interests of
the Order, and that an investio-ntinn
had revealed the most "damning dis
coveries" of extravagauce and cor
rupt management of the officers in
an official capacity ; but it is further
stated that these reports have been
smothered, and the records contain
ing them burned. xnd still another
report comes up that the Iowa grange
has an officer who is a defaulter, and
that his trial was carried on with lock
ed doors. All these rumors, which
have not been disproved, are causing
irremediable injury to this Order.
The country has had a sufficiency of
corruption, nepotism, and extrava
gance, and the least suspicion that the
Order has any irregularities in its
management is sufficient to diminish
greatly its influence. The Farmers
Union says, In regard to irregularities
of the Iowa grauge: "The rank aud
file of the Order are saddenend and
slokened with suspicions worse than
the truth. The whole result Is dis
satisfaction and possible disaster, and
the whole result is chargeable upon
those who most ardently protest their
devotion to the principles of the Or
der aud thoir desire for its advance
ment." While the honest men of the coun
try frankly and joyfully applaud
many of the works of the grange, yet
they cannot endorse, or even give
countenance to, unlawful manage
ment. So long as the Order endeav
ors to improve agricultural pursuits,
disseminate knowledge, and works
for the interests of the nation, It will
receive the most hearty co-operation
of all honest men, whether they be
farmers or not. The farming classes
compose the backbone and solid struc
ture of our national prosperity, and if
they keep the grauge pure, it will be
a great agent in the purification of
our legislation.
Darius H. Pixghey.
ChUUeothe, III.
SWIICDLIAC? iKAWGE AG!
The Farmer's Advocate, published
at Idianapolis, says :
"xV manufacturer made an arrange
meetwith a State Grange purchasing
agent, who ostensibly worked for a
very small percentage, but it wa3 im
possible for him to devote his time for
.so small a compensation, a iuriuer
commission was quietly allowed b- the
manufacturer. In a little time some
of thecounty agents who kenw a
thing or two the mselves, became sus
picious and wanted to deal directly
from-the manufacturer. This was ar
ranged with a great show of fairness,
the quiet commission beiug withheld
in each transaction. But it didnot rest
here. The local agents in turn be
came suspicious, and the county
agents had to be provided for. As a
result, there were three separate com
missions paid in each transaction,
while but one of the parties ever hau
dled the goods.
Such escape from the dishonesty of
middlemen is a matter of refreshing
contemplation. Were it but a single
case it might bo attributed to the dis
honesty of a singe individual, but it
seems in this iustance.to have extend
ed rapidly from one agent to a large
number subordinates, all of whom
were as eager to obtain a taste of the
polls as politicians are supposed to be
to get their finger into Credit Mobil ier
pies. And the Advocate solemnly
warns farmers to look into these agen
oles, and assures them that they are
proving far less profitable to the
consumers than it was supposed they
would prove."

cents a quart. Ten cents for apples
and one dollar for a doctor.

In Pennsylvania, a lady was hook
ed by a neighbor's bull, for wearing a
red dress, now bemoans that she has
no redress.
A Winona paper tells us that Win
ona is a "bad place to get drunk."
If the place persists in getting drunk,
it is a good place to stay away from.

The following is an instance of
the "severely calm" style of Western
roportorial description : "Yesterday
morning a boy sauntered up to a
yard onjEihth street, where a woman
was scratching the bonom of the
earth with a rake, and, leaning on
the fenoe said, "Are you going round
the baok yard after a while?" The
woman said she didn't know; may
be she would. Why? "Because"
said the boy, "I just saw the cistern
lid drop on tho baby's head a miuute
go, and thought if you went round
you might lift it off." it i3
