Correspondents remember this :
You are fooling your time away, and
wasting your material and brain
work, when you write for the Adver
tiser and neglect to send with your
communications your real name.
You can sign a fictitious name to
your articles if you wish to, and all we
require is a private line from the
writer with his proper name. And
if you are not working especially In
the interest of profanity, write with
pen and ink and not with a pencil,
and on one side only of your paper.
Write a3 plaluly as you can, and take
special pains iu this reaped in writ
ing the names of persons. You will
ave the printer from much annoy
ance by complying with these sug-
gebtiUhs.
S. R. Jamison, an old and esteem

He was Receiver of the U. S. Land
Office at this place dilring President
Lincoln's first term. Was a practical
printer, a writer of more than ordina

life conuected with several journals.
His estimable widow and little son

It pleases us to know that our ef
forts to make a good readable paper,
full of live matter, is by some people
at least, appreciated. Our ambition
always is to excel in making a paper
of the best kind, and one that shall
be generally liked by our readers.
And we ask the people to back U9,
subscribe for our paper, advertise with
us, patronize us when they have any
kind of printing to do and we war
rant that they will have happy re
turns for the same. We have in view
some enterprizes with regard to the
Advertiser, which will be a cred t
to ourselves, our town, county and

are nearer consummation.

Pursuant to previous notice the
Temperance electors of Brownville
met in convention at the Court House
on the evening of March 9th. Judge
Hewett waB called to the chair and
Jarvis S. Church was chosen Secreta
ry. On motion the following platform
was adopted :
We, as citizens df tKe city of
Brownville; in cohVehtiou assembled
for the purpose of honiinating a mu
nicipal tit?ket to be supported by the
electors of the city in April next, do
affirm :
1st. We are in favor of retrench
ment in all the fiscal affairs of the
city.
2nd. We are opposed to any munic
ipal expenditures of money beyond
the absolute demands of the strictest
economy.
3rd. We are unalterably opposed to
the policy of licensing the saleof spir
ituous, vinous and malt liquors in the
citv of Brownville.
.. 4th. We will support fad man for of
fice who does not stand squarely aud
affirmatively upon the above plat
form. After which the convention nomin
ated the following municipal ticket:
A. H. Giimore, Mayor; T. L. Schick,
Police Judge; Robert Teare, Clerk;
J. W. Newman, Treasurer; David
Campbell. Marshal; B. M. Baily and
H. C. Lett, 1st Ward Aldermen ; J.
W. Medford, 2nd Ward Alderman.;
LewisHlll. 3rd Ward A!de"rmanT"
E. E. Ebright. J. 8. Church and
Alf. W. Morgan were appointed an
Executive Committee of three to
whom was referred all matters which
might hereafter arise touching the
success of the ticket.
W. A. Polock presented the follow
ing address:
To the Citizens of Brownrllle:
We herewith present for your suf
frages a complete ticket, composed of
capable, honest, upright and strictly
temperate men. We openly and
frankly announce that we are opposed
to the present license System of -selling
by the glass intoxicating liquors.
We are pledged to oppose this system
by all moral, honorable and legal
means within bur power. We ask
you to support the ticket we here pre
sent as one of the means in our power
to suppress this traffic. We subscribe
to the political doctrine that places
the ruling and controling power in
tho hands of the majority. If the
electors of Brownville are in favor of
licensing the sale of intoxicating li
quors by the glass then let them vote
against the ticket w6 here present,
and we will submit for the present
and abide the results until the people
snau oeoome oeiier eaucatea upon
this subject. If & majority of the
electors are in favor of a total prohi
bition of the Sab of intoxicating li
quors in the city, then let them vote
for the temperance ticket. We thus
candidly and openly avow our' pur
pose and Intent, with the hope of ar
riving at the will of the people of
Brownville upon this subject.
In the event of thejisuccess of the
temperance ticket we will not resort
to other than lawful and legal reme
dies in the execution of the ill of
the people. This is our" last add only
appeal to the people of Brownville
before the election unless wp are plar
ed in a false position by the saloon in
terest of the cjty.
We have so high an appreciation of
the independence and the" intelligence
of those to whom our appeal is made
that we declare now in advaiice that
we shall not resort to the disgusting
and low measures, and the usual
trickeries of the trade of politicians
to insure the Ade'cess of our ticket.
We now leave the result in the hands
of the honest people of Brownville,
trusting that.there is virtue and hon
esty enough in the hetirts of all to
give us a decisive majority at the polls
on the 6th day of April next.
On motion the address was unani
mously adopted.
Short speeches were made by Messrs.
Slaughter, Church, Polock. Hewett
and Morgan.
On motion the proceedings of the
convention were to be furnished to
both the county papers for publica
tion. O. B. HEWETT,
Jarvis S. Church, Sec'y. Ch'n.
