James .Stevenson, with his young,
wife, returned to this city from their
wedding tour, on Tuesday. Their ap
pearance indicates the superlative de
gree of haj piness. May it be so for
ever with them.
t)r. Rrnzelton, of Peru, gave us a,
friendly call on Tuesday. This is our
first aeijiinitTtance with the Dr.. but
as he is alt old printer, we set him
lown, as he is reputed to be, a gentle
man and a gopd physician.
The temperance people of Rrown
ville have resolved to nominafea tick
et for the spring election, consisting
entirely of temperance men who must
pledge themplves to oppose the licen
sing of retail liquor establishments.
Mr. Church, the other eveninc.
in a little temperance speech, gave us
an item of news that the most flour
ishing teinpertince society in Nemaha
county is that at Nemaha City. Our
Nemaha friends need not be ashamed
of that report.
HO. Minick, Esq. called on u
and gave iis a" pleasant talk on Mon
day. Judge M. besides being one of
our best citizens ami most successful
farmers, is a genuine Republican
ranger, and sub-c'iitied for another
copy of the Advertiser.
T N. Morrow has purchased S.

horses and deserve to be well patron

law in such case. In looking oyer
exchanges we notice that others are
guilt v of the same oirvnsev Better

W. M. Brewer, traveling agent
and corrfspondent of the St. Joseph
Herald, showed his good; nattired
countenance in our sanctum on last
Saturday. Hope if he has anything
to s-iy about our city and people, he
will do them justice, as he was accus
ed by our predecessor of not doing so
on a recent visit.
Tisdel & Richards propose to sell
their goods farm implements and
hardware at wholesale, as cheap as
the merchants of St. Joe can do; and
other merchants of oar city can and
will, we believe, do as well. Farm
ers. Grangers, call and see these mer
chants, and if they will do as they
ty, make your arrangements to pur
chase of them. The interests of the
town and country are identical, and
by reciprocal trade, we build each
other up. instead of tearing down.
The Division of the Sows" of Tem
perance in this city, commemorated
Washington's Birthday, at their Di
vision room on last Friday evening
hv ii sumptuous banquet, speeches,
essays, songs. &c. We, upon iwvi'a
tion, were present and well entertain
ed by our temperance friend-. B. D
Slaughter, of Omaha, Grand Worthy
Patitarch of the order in Nebraska,
was oresent and made a short speech.
Amongst other things, he haid th'e
temperance people of the Statu were
going to organize themselves into a
political party, the same as any other
party, and have County and State
tickets n the field, and make every
effort to elect them. This social gath
ering was wel1 attended by both sex
es, and appeared to be a very enjoya
ble occasion.
It is wrong to gamble it is wick

of WarrenV Criminal Code." Thou
shalt not gamble at all says that code;

you gamble. Whether you put the

those dice alone. don't you draw the
matches; and that old greasy deck,
let it lepose upon tie shlf and accu
mulate dust. It is better to do so, for
if you throw, or draw, or play you
will lay yourself liable to the penal
ties of the criminal law. And wheth

on. you are liable to be fined. Things
are not as they "used to was," how.

our fellow citizen, James Sevenson

at the Atwood House.
Jonathan Higgins, of Lafayette

demonstrated in a substantial sort of
waj', his desire to see a good, live
newspaper well sustained within the
county. Mr. Biggish informed us
that he had pun-hnsed the property
known as the Lafayette, or Saunders'
