Cost of fences peb kod. There is
a great dit'iculry in estun.'.tm ti.
cost of fences, from the variety ami
differing valu- of ninf.-ri-il u-v-and
the many kinds of fences huilt, as
well as the difterences in their height,
mn-siveness, and thorou;hiie.o of con
struction. The best built fences in
the United .States are in Rhode Inland,
if tlie returns are correetly made, and
their average cot is the hiiche-t. Ti'e
best fences are of stone, and they are
aNo cheapest, repairs costing little,
though their tirt cost exceed- that of
any other kind.
The co-t of fences, as stated below,
is lowc-t in the Southern State". It i
tleemed besi to Rive tlie average of the
figures returned for those .--tates,
though they do not adequately ex
press tlie real cot. It is stated in
many of the.-e returns that the pro
per roil returned is simply the cot of
maul-ng the railo" ami laying them,
without counting expense of team
for hauling, and in some cases o'
hoard while doing the work. Noth
ing is reckoned usually for the value
of timber, and the estimate is often
based on the bare wages of hands em
ployed by the month. The work is
done by tenants as odd jobs, or in the
winter interval between cotton-pick-

Amount and cost of fencing.
Tho inquiry was made for "the num
ber of roils of fence to each one hun
dred acres of farm-lands, including
together improved ami unimproved
land." As a few in the older S'ate-,
and many in the South and We-t,
answered with reference only to the
"improved'' acre?, it was deemed
proper, in calculating the acres fenced,
to avoid nn exhihit erroneously larjie.
to exclude one-fourth of the unim
proved area in the New Enirland
.States, (with the exception ot Maine, i !
the Middle States, and Marvland
one-half in the unimpioved portion
of farms in the States of tho Ohio
Valley and lake region, between Ken
tucky and Wisconsin, and in Maine;
three-fourths of unimproved lands in
the States between Virsrin a and the
Mississippi, where only the "im
proved" area is usually reckoned a
the farm ; all of the unimproved land
in Virginia, (where a no-fence law
has been en icted) Florida, and Louisi
ana, where water boundaries save
much fencing; and in Minnesota.
Iowa, Kansas. Nebraska, and Califor
nia, where some improved land is un
fenced, only three-fourths of the im
proved area was taken.
