The Sabbath School Pic-nic of the several schools in this city passed off very pleasantly on last Wednesday af ternoon, in the grove souther Brown ville. All enjoyed the occasion verv much. The order of exercise appear ed te be for every one to follow the dictates of the spirit, and have all.the pleasure that the time and p.ace would admit of; Following out thia incIinaJLion, the first nine engaged in. a game of base ball, under the com mand of Captains Lett and Gibson. The game became very exciting, "it was admitted by all that there was some very fine striking done, but the hitting was below the average. The catching was excellent especially those caught on the side of the head. A home run was made by Rich and Hays in an early stage of the game. Your reporter failed to see this, but was told by an eye witness that they made a mile a minute. They have not been heard from since. Prof. D. was engaged in telling the young ladies their fortunes, and the young ladies were engaged in. having their fortunes told. Thus everything was passing oil" as pleasant as a mar riage bell, when an unfounded rumor was circulated that Brother Gilmore was lost, and immediate search was prepared for. "While this preparation was going on our minds naturally re verted to Doctor Livingstone, Doctor Franklin, the ninety-nine sheep that were lost, the one sheep that was not lost, besides a great many other things that ought- to be lost. It was, howev er, unanimously agreed that Brother Gilmore 'was not included in the things that ought to be lost. Search being instituted he was soon found, just where we might expect to find such a man, engaged in ti eating the children to a ride in the swing. Long live Gilmore say the children, and if ever he is lost they will, without re gard to denomination, nationality, or color, turn out en inazxc to hunt him up. In the evening the ladies began to wink at each other they huddled to gether they talked low down they looked wise and mysterious. It was evident t,ho.t something was up. Your I reporter rushed fpr pert and paper, but the ladies were a little too fast for him. On his return, here, there and everywhere, snow white table cloths were spread upon the grass, and before his pencil could be sharp ened supper was announced and now what was to be done? If an at tempt was made to write up the sup per at once, McCivcry, Dunn, Dye, Lett and their followers would eat it all up, and I be compelled to go home hungry. If I took a hand with them at the table, clc-e attention to bu-i-nesrf would prevent a general observa tion of the sunouirlings, and, hence, I would not bo ante to give a graphic description of things in general. 1 chose the latter which must be my excuse for the want of a better de scription of the supper. The next time you send a man to report a supper, feed him well before he starts, so iha$ he will be able to at tend to business. As far as heard from everybody had plenty to eat, and a general good time. E. Proceedings of tlite County Commls Moner.s. Tuesday, July 2d, 172. Commissioners met. Present, C. F. Harms, II. O. Angie Newman, of Lincoln, -poke at the Methodist church la-t Sunday morning in behalf of the Lady's Foreign Missionary Society. This is a. society organized by the Iadys of the M- E. church, and its special object is to send missionaries and educated lady physicians to hea then women. The women of India, China and nearly all eastern countries are kept in darkness and slavery, and their peculiar social customs seclude women from the society of men. So dose- is this seclusion that no heathen woman of those countries is ever al lowed to bo seen or treated by any male physician, and are therefore of ten left to tlie of neglect and cruelty. They can however be attended by ladys, and it is one of the first objects of this society to reach them in this way, and minister to their bodily suf ferings. Mrs. Newman gave a very interesting account of the condition, social and moral, of the people of Indi and China, particularly, which is the field of labor for this society ; and the great dimouity which have had to be overcome, and we are sure that she awakened the sympathies of all towards suffering heathen woman hood. Her address was listened to throughout with the closest attention, and we believe that no one who heard her but felt that she is a noble devo ted christian woman, and that the work she is engaged in, so worthy and ably, most appropriately appeals to the hearts of women, and directs them to a sphere of labor where they may do great good. Mrs. Newman is an educated and refined lady, and although exceed ingly delicate, devotes her strength to this work without salary or pecuniary reward. Quite a number of ladies became members of the society. The dues, of which two cents per week for each constitute its revenue, and many be came subscribers to the JTcathen Wo man's Friend, its organ, and all who, heard here were pleased and benefit ed bv her address.
