Colony, York County, in this State,
has been over In Illinois, visiting Ar
thur Hryant's forest of his own mak
ing, and writes tho State Journal, Lin
coln, from which we extract the fol
lowing. We have long known Mr.
Bryant, by reputation, as a tree grow
er, and last year enjoyed the pleasure
of making his personal acquaintance,
at Kichmond. Ho is a brother of
Wm. Cullen Bryant, tho Toot. Ar
thur Bryant came to Illinois years a
go and planted trt es ! And although
now his locks are white as the driven
snow, ho yet planus trees each year,
and will continue to do so as long as
his Master permits him to sojourn on
thl-. green earth-made to grow trees.
But we simply meant to extract, to

ern Trairie countries now is timber
planting. To predict that the now
comparatively treeless plains of the
West would. In the next half centu

little further on wore chestnuts, with
the ground beneath them covered
witbburs. witnesses of their produc
tiveness. Mr. Hryant and on aeeom

for the encouragement of those com
mencing life on treeless prairie-.
Kirst. we measured a Catnlpa tree,
whose rich foliage, and beautiful and
showy blossoms give it a crown of glo
ry among the neighboring trees.
This is twenty-eight years from tho
seed, and measured eighteen inches
above cround, it has a "circumference
of seven feet. Next, we measured a
Norwav Spruce, which is more than
fortv feet high, very blight in foliage,
raisin c its graceful trunk through a
ovratnid of branches. The lowe?
limbs of this tree do not drop off. but
