fire on last Thursday night. Nothing

Nannie McDonald, of Albia, Iowa,
which event took place at the resi
dence of the bride's father, (her sire
being a talented physician,) on the
2nd inst.
We learn from one who has seen
Mrs. Broady, that sue is, or was, a
Scotch lassie, but in temperamentand
physiogomy much resembles Hon.
Carl Schurz, enough to be readily ta
ken for the daughter of that distin
guished Teuton, and that in conver
sation her words fall with a kindred
magnetic influence upon the ears of
her hearers, that those of the Senator
named does upon the tympanums of
his auditors.
When Mr. Broady gets through at
tending court at Falls City and Oma
ha, he will return to Brownville, in
company with his new partner.
We congratulate our friend Broady
upon his new venture, and join our
people generally in expressing the
hope that the hearts of the loving
couple may continue to beat as by one
and the same pulsation, and that their
aliections may remain as pure and un
tarnishablo as gold. And further,
may the covenant Jefferson and Nan
nie have made be as lasting as life,
and as their ark is tossed to and fro
upon the tide of time may tho little
doves go out as from the ark of old,
over the receding waves and bring
back the olive branch of peace and
comfort to their declining years. In
a word may they become as the Stars

Conl Discovered in Nemaha County.
It is probably known to most of our
l'eaders that an Omaha company has
for some time been boring for coal in
the neighborhood of St. Deroin in
this county. We are pleased to no
tice in this issue that on last Friday
the company struck a 27 inch vein,
and arrangements are now being
made to work the same. This news
we herald with great glee, not doubt
ing that ita reception by our local
readers will be equally gleeful.
When one considers that our coun
try is being rapidly cleared of its for
ests, and that, in this State, timber is
exceeding scarce, the f:ict of coal de
posits being discovered in pa3ing
quantities, heightens the importance
of the fact now recorded. The rail
road companies of the country are
fast abandoning the use of wood in
consequence of its great cost. In Eu
rope trees are tended with all the care
usually bestowed here on hot house
exotics. We have little enough tim
ber now in our country for the build
ing of houses, steam and sailing ves
sels, furniture, and for shade trees,
&c. Time or use does not take from
it the heat-giving carbon, but if cut
down and thrown into devouring
stoves and furnaces, tho' it will emit
a brilliant flame and throw out a
pleasant heat, its career is as short as
brilliant.
No doubt exists in the minds of
those best informed that there is an
abundance of coal in this county to
supply the necessities of the people
for centuries, and the present discov
ery will lead to further developments
and redound to the material interests
of Nemaha county, inducing the es
tablishment of manufactories, &c.

Mr. David Barnes, of the firm of
Barnes, Moody & Co., hashisfinerea-
idence, south of the State Normal
School grounds, completed. This is
decfdedly tho best wooden building
in tho county. The contractors,
Messrs. Morton & Bro., have certain
ly done themselves great credit. They
had the entiro contract, from tho cel
lar to the tip of the roof, including
painting, plastering, &c, and they
defy anybody to show a better finish
ed job in the State.
Mr. J. L. Roy and family, of
Brownville, were in town the past
week on a visit to friends. Come of
ten Joe. We like to see your honest
countenance in this burg.
Mr. John Compton, of tho firm of
Compton Brothers, has been laid up
for some time, with Er3sipelas in the
foot. He is so as to be around with a
crutch.
Mr. Andy Tynan has moved on to
one of his farms out on the Muddy,
where he intends to engage extensive
ly in stock raising. We regret to
loose so good a citizen as Andy. May
success attend him.
Peru has one of the best ferries on
the Missouri river. Good boats, good
roads to aud from the same crossing
perfectly safe at all times. It is
something worthy of notice that there
never has been an accident happened
on this ferry since the first settlement

Messrs. J03 & Daily have got their
new store house enclosed. John
Bausfieldand Wesler, of Brownville,
have laid up the brick in the best of
style.

Peru is to have a steam ferry boat,
which will be ready to operate on the
opening of spring. It takes, at pres
ent, two flat boats to do the business
at this crossing.
C. G. Dorsey, E-?q.T from Beatrice,
was in town last week. He reports
business lively at Beatrice, and seems
to have lost all his former love for the
Missouri country. It is hoped he will
not forget her fair daughters. Hurry
up, Charley, or you will be called an
old batchelor before long. In short,
why don't you main-, Charley? Isn't
she willing?
It is perfectly safe for ladies to ap
pear on our streets now that mine
host of the City Hotel has slaughter
ed his old buck sheep, that has been
a butting nuisance for so long. Gome

most, goose or mutton chop?
J. P. Burdick has been over on tho
K. C, St. Jo and C. B. R. R., the
past week, looking for cars to ship bio
produce on. We are sorry to see that
be has injured his eyesight by so do
ing. He is compelled to wear gog
gles at present.
If those young bucks from the State
Normal School wish to keep out of
difficulty, they had best be careful in
the future how they move people's
signs and obstruct the public streets
of the town in the night, thereby en
dangering the lives of our citizens,
and interfering with their business.
Thoy need not flatter themselves that
they are- not known, for the moon
shown very bright last Friday night,
thereby enabling several parties to
observe their movements from their
windows.
G. S. Alexander delivered a lecture
in Peru on last Satufday eight. Sub
ject : "Effort and" Cuius." The sub
ject was handled in a masterly man
ner, and highly appreciated by the
large audience in attendance. We
hope this effort of the gentleman
will be followed by many more of
like character. Mr. A. stands high
as a lecturer, which fact lecture com
mittees of other places will do well to
remember when making up their
lists.
The editor of the Brownville Dem
ocrat need have no fears of spiritual
ism making an idiot of him. Nature
has got the start in that little job.
Whatever any one may think of
Col. Majors' political record, that road
that he and other citizens have made
in the northwest part of town is a
credit to any man, and it didn't cost
the town a cent. Go in Tom, and if
they cut off your political head the
good people of Peru will elect you
road supervisor next year.
Mrs. Sarah M. D:rily has moved
back to town. Dick is going to take
entire possession of tho old farm as
soon as he completes his medical stud
ies, and secures his feminine diploma,
which happy event it is rumored will
come off in about two weeks. Bully
for you, Dick.
Rev. Alexander was seen, last week,
passing up town with a shot gun in
one hand and a mammoth turnip in
the other. He had, evidently, been
"out on a little hunt." Tell us, par

On Sunday night about eleven
o'clock a man set fire to the grass to
burn a guard around a little unoccu
pied shanty a half mile west of town.
Having secured the shanty he walked
away and left the lire to burn as it
might. The wind was blowing from
the southeast and before morning it
was in John Long's pasture, burninir
fence and timber. It was, with diffi
culty, stopped in that direction, but
burned a large tract of young timber
for E. M. Long. Monday forenoon
the wind changed to the west, and
blew the lire towards town. Fortu
nately the young men about the
neighborhood had, a few nights be
fore, burned a strip of grass west o:
us for a fire guard, but it w.v;not com
plete and with much hard work th
lire was stopped. If tho gras had
not been burned, or the wind had
changed in tho night, when folk
were asleep, it would have burned

orchard, grove, fence, &c.
All the sick mentioned, last week j
