Mr. R. V. Sluir Informs us that the story
and a half residence lately occupied by Mr.
Snow, on the old Alexander Handley farm,
south of North Star, in Mo., Tvas burned
down one morning last week. The origin of
the fire Is unknown, but is supposed to have
come from a defective llue. The upper story
of the house was all ablaze when first dis
covered, which was about nine o'clock in the
morning. Most of tho bedding, furniture
and clothing, was saved. The cooking uten
sils, cooking stoves Ac, were burned with
the house. The family, however, are not
left In destitute circumstances.
'The Weather. Thursday, Friday and
Saturday of last week was stormy; some
wind and more snow; Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday of this week the weather has been
fine and moderate, thawing very slightly.
We have six Inches or snow on roads well
prepared to receive it, which gives us the"
best and only sleighing we have had for live
winters past. Every cutter, slelgh,( Jumper
and sled Is engaged for days ahead and we
are having one constant jingle of bells thus
far this week. Qn Wednesday the hot sun
and south wind sent the snow running down
the gutters and laid the mud in plain view
on every cross street and main avenues of
the city.
The Rev. J. T. Baird delivered a fine lec
ture before the Brownvllle Literary Associa
tion on last Friday evening. His subject
was mubic. He gave us the life, character
and many incidents recorded of musical
composers and performers, and concluded by
reciting the happy, joyous and subduing ef
fect tlie harmony of musical strains' had up
on men and the brute creation. It was in
terspersed with many anecdotes which were
well adapted to illustrate his points and in
terest his hearers. As to whether the ltev.
gentleman was dressed a la pompuilour or
not we leave to the criticism of our fashion
able cotemporary to say, until which time
the lecture going people will doubtless re
main in horrible suspense.
Ujiset. Mr. and Mrs. Porter, Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas, Col. Furnas aud Mr. Shook retui li
ed fiom tho Capital, teaching hero Friday
evening. Jacob Rogers met tliem at the De
pot with his sleigh and four, and, the even
ing being cold, tlie conclusion was that time
home was tlie essence of the contract. In
Hying along, by some mishap, over went the
sleigh, leaving the box to cover the passen
gers and the balance of tlie sleigh to keep
Jake as close to the snow and hubs as that
amount of weight could pack him. The
horses, for a wonder, stood agasl with amaze?
ment fearing to stir a hoof. The sleigh box
was turned up on its side. Furnas took him
self oil of Mrs. Thomas and tho baby, and
she removed herself and child from Porter.
Thomas, Mrs. Porter and Shook were mixed
equally as uncomfortable, but it resulted In
no harm so lar as has been yet discovered
The. sleigh was ti pped up and Jake released.
All things were put to rights in short meter
and the party made the home stietch on
goed time.
