Rixon. of Nebraska College, the Rev. Wm.
Talbotof Peru, th.e Rev. Mr. Chamberlain. -
of Council Bluffs, and the Rector of Christ'
Church, Brownvllle. The first service was
held on Saturday evening at "K o'clock, .the
Rev. Dr. McNamnra preaching a very able
and eloquent convocation sermon, on the
power oi trutn as round in the church and
inculcated by herddctrinea, In contradistinc
tion to Infidelity.
On Sunday morning tho principal, feature
of the service was the ordination of Prof.
John Lyon, of Falls City, and W. H. Wilson
u colored man, to ttie "holy order of Dea
cons." Morning prayer was read by Rev.
Mr. Chamberlain and Prof. Rlxon. The or
dination sermon was preached by tho Rev.
Mr. Davis, Rector of the Parish, from the 1st
Cor., V chap., and 2nd verse, and was in his
usual styie, mil or earnest words and out
spoken truth. His charge to the candidates
was very impressive. Immediately after tho
ordination, the Bishop administered the
"Holy Communion," assisted by the Rev.
Dr. McNutnara, a largo number receiving
the sacrament. In tho afternoon the Rev.
Pror. Rlxon and the Rev. Mr. Wilson, ad
dressed the Sunday School of the Parish.
Evening service was held at" o'clock, and
conducted by the Rev. Mr. Lyon and the
Rev. Mr. Wilson, the newly ordained dea
cons. The Bishop preached rrom the text,
"and he went away sorrowing." The ser
mon was full of glowing thought and loving
words, to impenitent men, and full' of com
fort to earnest Christiana. At the closeof the
service, the Bishop administered wlmt he
called the "apostolic rite of conformation"
Uo five candidates,-addreaalng' them with
"fatherly words and bidding them God speed
in their christian course, and closing the
tervice with the "blessing of peace." .
At these services urch was crowded
to Us utmost capacity, niauy going away un
able to gain admission. Tho music was of a
high order, purely churchly in its character,
and directed by Mrs. Davis, with !ier usual
ability. The offerings of the people were ap
propriated to the missions of the Diocese,
amounting to nearly $20.00.
On .Monday morning the convocation held
a business meeting in the church, and ad
journed to meet in St. Mary's Church, Ne
braska City, nt the call of the Bishop. The
Rev. Mr. Lyon was formerly a Methodist
Minister of considerable standing, in the
State of Michigan. Tho Rev. Mr. Wilson
has charge of St. Augustine's Mission at
Nebraska City, and, we understand, 1 in press
en all classes of citizens, with his zeal in
laboring among his own people.
We may well congratulate tho Rev. Mr.
Davis on the growth and prosperity of his
Parish, and tho beauty and order of the Con
vocation services.
The Bishop and Clergy return their sincere
thanks to the parishioners of Christ's
Church and the citizens of Brownvllle, for
their kind attentions during their stay
among them.
