Quite a number of prominent visitors from
a distance were on tho Fair grounds yester
day. Judge Blanchard, of Placervllle, Cala
Tornla, Judge Kinney and family, of Ne
braska City, and J. A. "Ware and family of

Geo. P. Tuckor, of Helena, Johnson county
-an old and valued friend, called this morn
ing. He Is the Republican nominee for State
senator for this District, composul of Rich
ardson, Johnson and Nemaha counties. "We
knew him while In tho 2nd Nebraska Caval
Tf, Co. F, and knew him as a faithful sol
dier and a favorite with his company and
all his acquaintances. Ho Is now one of the
true, honest farmers of Johnson county and
deserves the full party vote.

around, no charge having been entered, he
knowing nothing whatever of the case, they
consequently go unpunished. This Is an in
justice to those that were fined, a loss to ;the
State, and should bo a warning -fcgalnst the
-assumption of too much authority by an
officer.

Native Red Cedar. Benton Aldrich had
three specimens of this tree at the Fair, on
which he took the first premium. He Is do
voted to the cnlturo of fruit and ornamental
trees, and these Red Cedars are beautiful.
We have them, and will report progress.
Roper fc IVetherald's Flour took the 1st
premium at the Fair. Their Mills are at Be
atrice. We had the pleasure of making tho
acquaintance of Mr. Wetherald during the
Fair. This flour is on sale at Worthing fc
McLaughlin's Commission House. We will
say more of It when we try" It.

Street Lamps. The effort made to make
our street lamps burn Is commendable, and
the success makes all hope that our Marshal
will "try try again," till all our lamps do du
ty. The Seirlng Machine Const. Du
ring the Sewing Machine contest at the
State Fair, we became acquainted with Miss
J. S. Colbert, of St, Joseph, Mo., the lady op
erator of the Grover & Bakar Machine, and
cannot refrain a compliment both to her
ability as an operator and as a talker for the
machine she represents. She had work on
exhibition In connection with tho machine
that all could not fall to pronounce wonder
fully beautiful. Yet she sat down to the Ma
chine and did as good, thereby proving that
the work was not extra sample work, but
jest such as the machine is capable of every
day In expert linnds. In discussing tho ad
vantages ofthe machine she became elo
quently In earnest, as, also, In defending it
against all the prejudices that were brought
against It. The company have. In her, one
who loves the machine she represents, and
whose seal -and fervency In the wotk cannot
be surpassed, which is one half the battle in
a contest for the premium; although tho
awariTin this case was just and jlr. The
company did well In sending her to the aid ;
of the resident agent, J. W. Bliss.

um at the State Fair last week, a show case
filled with a beautiful assortment of samples
of their goods, such as Toilet Articles, Cos
metics, Dyes, Rubber Goods, Medicines eta.
It was certainly as fine a display as can be
made outside of any of the larger cities, and
was a great credit to the enterprise of tills
firm, whose already good reputation for a
large, pure and varied stock has even gained
additional firmness In the minds of all who
noticed the display. May their shaddow
and sales never grow less.
Northern Lights. One Of the most
brilliant phenomenas was visible in this sec
tion last Saturday evening, from dusk to a-
bout 10 o'clock. Tho sky In tho north for
several degrees was lighted np almost to
equal moonlight; the red and white rays run
ning up to near the center of the zofclth; rne
red to the wesi of north, the whlto east of
north. We have always understood these
displays to be the forerun ers of cold weather
and In this instance tho sign has held good,
as yesterday was fresh enough to make heavy
clothing feel comfortable, and last night
blankets were usefuL

suffering truly deplorable. It. appears that
some month or so ago a man by the name of
McConoughay originally from Indiana
came here from the west, having been disap
pointed in homestead matters, built him u

moved his family; consisting of a wife and
five children. About three weeks since ho
