Hefzel, who rcturne from Tecumseh Tuesday we learn that the meeting at that place to meet the officers of the Q. &:M.ind B. Ft. K. & P. Railroads, and talk ove railroad matters, was large and enthusiastic. .Speeches were made by Messrs. Lett, King, and Furnas, and several of the citizens of that place; the enthusiasm of the people showing plainly that they know just where their interests are, and they were determined to avail themselves of the present opportuni ty of aiding to the best of their abili ty, the road which would do them the most good, i. e.the Q,. & M. and 13. Ft. K. & P. R. R. A motion vrjuf put to the meeting and carried that they request the Commissioners of Johnson county to call an election to vote upon the do nation ef $100,000 to the above named road, and the meeting agreed to raise $1000 for the survey of the road through Johnson county. State Board of Immigration. We have been permitted to peruse letters of date May 21st, 22d and 23d, from C. N. Kakstexs, Commissioner of Foreign Immigration for the State of Nebraska, located, for the present, in New York. He is laboring with great zeal and earnestness in the dis charge of his duties. He greatly needs statistics and details from dif ferent portions of our State, particu larly as to agricultural matters. We have undertaken to furnish him with such a3 we have and can obtain, and will be glad to receive information from any and all parts of the State. Character of water power, supplies of stone, timber, $sc, seems to be the character of information most desirec'. Mr Karstenes has already been, in strumental in sending quite a number of families to Nebraska. For the benefit of those "Xorth of the Platte, who are'disposed to complain, some what, wo will state that, thus far, all have been sent North of the Platte. Statement of the Financial Condition of Jfenialia County. In'our last issue we completed the publication of the statement of the financial condition of this county. To prepare this statement has requir ed a vast amount of unremitting la bor and research.!:rhe people of the county are under many obligations to our efficient County Clerk, James M. HACKEB.'for the promptness and ac curacy with which he has complied with the order of the County Com missioners in this respect. There is, probably, nothing else in which the people feel a greater interest than In their financial matters. They want to "see the books," and It is right they should. In no other way can they all be accommodated than by publica tion. Such publication should be made annually in every county, and every paper in the State. "The people -will pay no item of expense with more pleasure. i in The State SaubajLh. School.CoiiTcntion. Of the M. E. Church for Nebraska, met at Peru in this county, yesterday afternoon, and will remain in session three days. We are led to believe that the attendance will be good, and "the proceedings full of interest to the good cause. The friends of the cause from everywhere are invited. Excursions on the U. P. R. R. are now the order of the day. A party of three hundred school marms arriv ed in Omaha one day last week. They were from California, and on a visit east, to their former home. Seven sleeping and three hotel cars were provided for their accommoda tions. Some recent sub-marine discoveries made near the mouth of the Arkan sas Tiver by John Coudeu, a noted diving bell operator, warrauts the conclusion that he has discovered the remains of De Soto, the discoverer of the Mississippi. Our State Resources. From the books of the auditor of State, we have the following state ment of the valuation of property in the counties having the largest popu lation : Total amouut of property assessed in Nebraska for the year 1870 is about $53,000,000, an increase over last year of about $11,000,000. Wo doubt if any Land Office In the United States can show a larger amount of business for the same time. Educational. Editor Advertiser: Wo find, by visiting some of our schools, that Improved methods of Teaching are yet unknown, pupils will read four times per day, each member read ing a verse apiece, parot-likc, not knowing the subject of the piece. Wc find young ty ros climbing up and down tho ABC ladder, with many a tumble as of old. AVo find questions asked and answered verbatim, and no explanations given aside from the text-books used. We find slates and pencils In the hands of the older pupils, but only used for ciphering. Maps, charts, and Globes arc entire strangers. Now and then we find a set of school tablets. In short the school Is "let to the lowest bidder." But we find everywhere the interest in creasing on the part of the patrons of the schools, and we fully believe that If teachers would come up to the work, and do their du ty, there would be no trouble in getting the hearty co-operation of the parents. We find some teachers that are. In our candid opin ion, not doing their duty; and wo wish, to call their attention to a few facts. We want them to do ono of two things: Either to re formaud endeavor to govern aud teach, or withdraw from the work ; for wo should dis like to publish the present condition of their schools. We shall make mention of a few of these items for correction : First of oil, a lack of government generally; second, too much whispering, and not enough work or study ; third, too much formality, and not enough life or annimation ; too much contradicting both in class and to the teacher. This Is bad, "I'll do so-and-so," and do It not, Is too 'fre quently used. This will cause pupils to lose confidence in your word. Now, those who know themselves guilty of any of the above named criticisms, will do me a favor by an Immediate correction, as I shall make my report in July, and I should not like to report a failure on the part of any. I want your hearty co-operation In raising thestnndard of teachers' qualifications. We have been requested by a number of school ofiicers to select them a No. 1 teacher for the fall term, and we aro now taking observa tions in that direction. Good teachers are at a premium, and Improved methods of tcach lnaro welcomed. After all the world Is moving, the light is spreading, and progres sion is trampling over her foes. Wo have some good teachers In our county, and have the material to make more. All they want Is experience a"nd the work. So let us work together for the general good ot our young State. I trust these corrections will be made and all will labor to Improve our common school system. S. W. McGuew, Co. Sup't. The 2f ew Fnnding Bill Its Provision. New York, June 4. All the "Wash ington specials this morning seem to agree in asserting that the new fuud ing bill, as matured by the ways and means committee, is eminently dis tasteful to Secretary 13outwell; and that the members generally express the opinion that there will be no leg islation on finances at this session. Although the committee has been very reticent concerning its provis ions, it has been learned that the first loan is for one thousand millions of consolidated stock. Second, bonds are plain four per cent, thirty yenr obli gation, free from all national State or municipal taxation,, except as imposed on income. Third,, deposits of gold in tne Treasury at tnree per cent, in terest are authorized the proceeds of such deposits to be used in the re demption of the 5-20s, beginning with the earliest issuos those of 1862. This is the length and breadth of the scheme. Tho proposition of Boutwell for for eign agencies is left out, and there is not a word about it. CoNSTAJfTixorLE, June 6. Yester day, about one o'clock p. M., a fire broke out, which spread with alarm ing rapidit3T through the richest quar ters of the city. Flames were dis covered in an old building in the Pero, on the north side of the golden horn. A strong wind was blowing at the time. The fire quickly communicated with the adjoining buildiugs.0 The efforts of firemen and citizens to stop the progress of the flames were futile, and in a few hours the residences of the English, American and Portu guese ambassadors, consulates, the Naorni theatre, many churches and mosques, thousands of houses and the richest stores and shops in the city were reduced to ashes. The losses of life by falling walls was fearful. It is estimated that at least thirty people were killed or injured by this cause alone. The loss is incalculable. The fire at this hour (noon) is still burn ing fiercely. The excitement of the people beggars description. j q New York, June 4. A cable dis patch from Rome states that the Ecu menical Council yesterday decided that the dogma of infallibility be pro claimed on the 39th inst., in honor of the iirst of St. Peter. Extensive preparations are being made to celebrate the occasion, and it is said that the display of pomp and pageantry will surpass any demon stration of the kind ever witnessed in Europe. Immediately after the promulga tion of the dogma of infallibility, on the 25th of Juno, the Ecumenical Council will take a recess until the 15th of October. A religious man of Boston" who has been to Europe, and wants every body to know it, commences his pub lic prayers thus: "O, Lord, thou kuowest that when I was in Europe," &c. An Ohio widow, alluding doubtless to the death of her husband, said that "there was nobody to take care of herself and children bnt God, and he was killed by the Marietta railroad." The Herald says : "Greeley works like a beaver; but even as a beaver can work only one dam at a time," Greeley on the contrary, can work a variety of "damus" at any time.
