They are open bids on. the head of Main Street. They , tree njf-nnn and alL NEW TELEGIlXPII LINE. We were last Tuesday favored with a visit from Mr. Van Arrnan, Agent, who Is now re ceiving subscription-, In the River towns on the Missouri, to the Qroat Western Telegraph Company. It 1 proposed, by this Company to construct a line of Telegraph on the West bank of the Missouri river, from Omaha to St. Louis, anil that every bxirtness man shall have an opportunity to become a stock-hold erlnthe company, the strares are placed at $25,00; upon the payment of 10,00, acartifl cate for 125,00 will be given. As will be seen by the followlngn otico their facilities are the best, and they propose to make their rates the lowest ever offered. The following will show the Improved farllltle of this c6rrfpany. The soefniilgTj. impossible feat of sending Telegraph messages in opposite directions at the same instant over a single wire, is dally elng accomplished by the Great Western Telegraph Com pan y. At their office In this city may le Been; a "Duplex Transmitter," which works In connection with a similar in strument in Milwaukee, so that the operator at both ends can send off their messages to any point at the same moment. This gives the Company double business capacity, with butslitcht extra expense, uy use oi this in strument, also, the resistance of the line is reduced to a veryEreat extent, allowing the transmission of dlppatche In bad weather. when, by tlieoia syRtem. tne line would worn very hard. This Invention is of great lmpor- portance, anu it Is of interest both to Tele graph men and the general public. It has never lefore been so thoroughly tested as now. Chicago Vot. The Improvement referred to above will 1 used on the line of the Grent Western Tele graph Company, now nea rly completed be tween Chicago and Omaha. The poles are already set to this city, and wire is being stretched from Des Moines west as fast as it can e obtained from the manufactory. Omaha Icejmoiican. The poles for this line are now being set this side of riuttsmouth, and the work will go right along as fast as the weather will per rait It Is said that several of our raoniod men subscribed to the stock ot the company lrvst fall, but not snfflcient to warrant the company In opening an oflloe here, yet Mr. Van Armanknew nothlngofBuohasnbscrlp- tlon, and feels assured that the company has no knowledge thereof, Jf ever made. It looks strange to say the least of It, yet, we hope our citizens will do sufficient to have an office here, for the rates now charged by this line where Jn operation are only about one-lxth of what other companies extort. Mr. Church is also havjnx material got on the ground for a residence In the southern portion of the town. romance: and birdsiiot. South BrowDville was last Tuesday night brought Into sudden notoriety by th climax to a left-banded KnochArden romance, which may yet be embalmed in poetic history by the Immortal pn of X. g. Ba ker. It appears that last summer or fall one Thom as ITunter, colored, left his spouse, also colored, who after being left alone awhile, concluded It was not good to be left alone any longer, and took up with another feller, also colored, w-ho goes by the name of John, alias "the (Juinea Nigger." Sometime ago the aforementioned Thomas returned to reclaim his affectionate spouse, which he succeeded in doing after a series of negotiations, the said gentleman from Guinea finding rest and consolation for his lacerated feelings In the shanty occupied by Walla- pus, a colored female living near the domlcil of Emily, the spouse of the aforesaid Thomas. .Well, last Tuesday night, it appears from the lights before us on this dark subject, the said (Juinea nigger John came to the premises of Thomas and Commenced Jnwing the sahl Thomas, and picked up an axe and dared the aforesaid Thomas out, upon which Thom as the aforesaid took a shot gun, loaded with bird shot, and fired, the shot taking effect In the facof the above mentioned sable citizen from Ouinea. Hunter then came and gave himself up to SherlfT Planters. Yesterday morning an examination of the case was had before Judge Morgan, District At torney Jlewett for the State, and Hon. S. M. Rich for defendant. The examination resulted In the discharge of the aforesaid Thomas Hunter. A Splendid Plctnre !
