lirlatrare H. This test was made with 1" ounvs of
the Walter, somewhat frozen, to St ounces of each of
the other varieties.
Next morning the Superintendent, Clerk, and one
of the Mrectors of the Pleasant Valley Wine Co.
(the parties who conducted the test the day before,)
to satisfy themselves of the merits of the "Walter'
bv an equal trial, tested 17 ounces of Iona from the
same lot that were used the day before, and the
saccharometer stood at 91 the Walter beating it a.
Had 17 ounces of the Delaware and Catawha been
pressed equally hard with the Walter, their skins
and centres being acid, the Delaware would have
stood lower and-ie Catawba proportionably below
the Delaware. . All the other varieties ranged much
lower than those enumerated above.
There bad been constant rains and damp weather
a the section where the Walter grew its competit
ors growing at Hammondsport and along the lakes,
where there had been but little rain during the sea
sondry soil and weather being necessary for the
perfect sweetening of grapes.
A committee of the American Institute Farmer s
Club, in a reeport or Sept. "J2. 1st, printed In the
New York Semi-Weekly Tribuneof Sept. Sth.after
speaking of the qualities of the Walter, say: "We
conclude the Wnltrr will he a valuable grape In the
grape regions of the npper Mississippi. on the shores
of Lake Erie. In western New lurk, on the slate
oils of western Pennsylvania, and wherever else
native grapes are sucoeMSl'ully grown."

Dear Sirs: Yours of the 1st Ii I am In receipt of.
la which yon ask it I have any objections to sending
vou, for publication, the facts I am acquainted with.
In relation to the character of the Walter Grape. I
have never Indorsed the character or usefulness ot
vines, or other articles of any description, and would
not at my present stage of lite were it not for two
reasons which seem sufficient. First, I know the
Walter Grape, will meet the prejudices wideepread
throughout the country, caused by the worthleatnens
In moNt localities of many of its predecenaora. Sec
ond, because I can say from personal observation
that the Walter Is the best variety I have had any
knowledge of. and I think I have cultivated nearly
ail that have be?n recommended, discarding them
ail and falling back npon the Concord and Hartford
Irolitic as vineyard varieties. I am interested in
knowing that the Iruit of the Waller grows larger
each year as the vine grows older, being last yer
fully one-third larger than It was two years ago. It
grows well ; "Sets frnit well. I have seen it ripe sev
eral times befor: Hartford, and I have never seen
any mildew on Its fruit or on its large and thick, but
Delaware shaped folinge. The flavor of the fruit I
think superior to any other variety. You say In
your circular It Is a seedling of the Delaware and
Diana; I think the character of each of then varie
ties is quite distinguishable m the II 'alter, particu
larly that of the Delaware. I ulsd think it would
make a wine of high character. I have visited it
annually since it first bore. six yen rs ago, three times
In Ulster Co., N. Y., In a low valley, where the Isa
bella seldom ripens, and each time it was fully ripe
In August. I have seen it each of the three past sea
sons in Poughkerpsie. ripening at the same time,
excepting last year, when the constant rains pre
vented all varieties from maturing at their usual
time, but it perfected its fruit by the ojlddle of Sep
tember. The rai.iru of the last mentioned crop I
have seen and eaten, which were good. From Us
succeding in the low valley and teiincioun clay ot
Modena, and also in the dry slatev - position In
Poughkeeiwie, I thin i it will be well adapted to the
varied sections of our country. Vou niav make
whatever use of these opinions you dwm proper.
