' Tbe Trial t the Great Western Fire
Eitlnrikher hvst Monday afternoon on
the Levee in this city was a perfect success,
tjulte a crowd was down to witness it, among
whom was our city Council. A pile was con

coal tar and coal oil poured over the same,
making it as combustible as possible. This

I a Mr. Hauk with his Extinguisher put
out every vesttage of fire in three minutes
and one-four thi Attempts were then made
to re-llght the pile, which could not be done
until more coal oil and tar was put on, show
ing that with this Extinguisher tbe part of a
fire put out is kept under the dampening in
fluence for some time after. It was again set
on fire, after which the Extinguisher was
charged and the fire which was under full
headway put out In about two minuU-s. In
these tesls the most skeptic were participants

' "FEVER UNDERSOLD?
Are "Played Out" phrases in this city,
People are getting tired of buying poor goods
even at "the lowest prices," for they find that
when they pay a "shoddy price" they get a
"shoddy" article. This may be illustrated by
tbe flrm of F. E. JOXIXSOX ft. CO., In ihls
city. They sell at the lowest possible price at
which they can make a livlag profit, and will
keep Jto Inferior Goods with which to
fool their customers and undersell others.
With the present new stock you cannot buy
to better advantage any w here else, for what
you buy you can rely on and you ought to wil
llngly pay a reasonable advance on eastern
prices. A merchant must swindle you or
break up in business if he sell you goods
cheaper than F. E. Johnson & Co.

hands, &c Since which time Methodism has
been all wrong, and Spiritualism all right.

t ti . CASH vs. NOTES..
Some five years ago, Mr. Shanbacher, of
Hannibal, Mo., insured his life In the St.
Louis Mutual for $5,000, ten years endow
ment. Some time in May or June last be
died, leaving four notes unpaid, amounting
to $1,001 60. The company paid, according to
the terms of the policy, $3,998 41. The widow,
it seems, is dissatisfied, expecting to have re
ceived the full .5,0u0. Bnt the Company have
acted in good faith, paying every dollar that
was named in the bond. Supposing Mr. S.
hail tcken out a policy In the "Mutual Life"
for So.Ooo, paying the same rates, all cash. We
will suppose bis age to be 40. lie would pay
S-V14 50 annually. He would have paid in the
five years, ?i,072 50, and at death would have
received at least six thousand dollars in
stead of $m 41. Which is the letter plan.
