Some croakers Eay "we'll be over run with fruit di rectly, and it will be a drug on our r-.r.nda." "Who is there, now grown, vho cannot loJk. back and sec ia his native State when he was a boy, when srries wcre ivcn away for gathering, tnd watch along a3 population in creased and additional orchards were j !.mted, and thousands cf trees addi tionally grown in the eanie neighbor hood, that the price of fruit kept going up, until to-day in that same neighborhood fruit is worth as much S3 it Is here. Don't be afraid of planting or grow ing too much good fruit. Iu addition to the natural increase of population, the taste and desire for fruit is greater every year, and the best evidence i3 the steady and even advancing price for good fruit. The Journal cf Horticulture, in t peaking on this subject, says : "The quantity of strawberries raised around Boston 13 variously estimated at from ten to twenty times as many as were grown twenty years ago, ye t the price ha advanced from fifty to one hun dred per cent." And so it may be said of all other varieties of fruits. Early Rose and Early Good. Ill cli Potatoes. We planted this season two rows each of Early Hose, Goodrich and Shaw rotatoes, on the same day, side by side. They wero planted simply as early potatoes, for our own table; had no extra cure or attention. As to the time of being ready for use, the Rose was about two weeks earlier than either of the others. Th8 Goodrich and Shaw came in about the same time; if any difference, the Goodrich a little ahead. We left sixteen feet of the row of Bcse for seed. On digging them, we had ninety-eight pounds. They wero fine, large, well formed tubers, about the size of the largest eld fashioned Neshanock. "We. planted a few Goodrich at an other time and place, as much for ex periment E3 anything else. Planted iinglo eyes, four in a hill. At digging time wo dug and weighed twelve hills separate. The average was a fraction over nine pounds to the hill. We are aware this is not up to some cf the fancy yields, yet we think It good, and sx tatisfied with it. . In rrrd to the Early Bose, we think it fully sustains all its most san guine friends have said in its behalf. It is earlier than any other variety we nave tried. Yields well, and the tube is cf an excellent quality. We shall jzso It as the early potato, until some thing better 13 produced. List cf Fruit Adapted to IVc- trasiia. Mr. J. II. August 11th, B.C. II. 7. Furnas: Deau Sir. At the request cf Mr. Ellsworth, President of the Johnson County Agricultural Society, I send you a few items in regard to different varieties cf fruit rals -;d in this county, in reply to yours ef July 17th. . Among the several fruit growers of this county, I think that Mr. Corsen, three miles south cf Tecumsch, has been the mc.-.t sucecr fu 1. He has seventy-five apple trcc3 in bearing, and several hundred that are not yet. Of the many varieties tested by him, he thinks the Bed Astrachan the most reliable of all; perfectly hardy, and an average bearer. The fruit 13 excel lent and of good size. Early Harvest very good apple, not so hardy as Astrachan. Smith's Cider profuse bearer; thinks that it will succeed well here. Winter Bambo perfectly reliable. Bawle's Jannett will do pretty well. In addition to the varie ties mentioned, Mr. C. has the North ern py, Cooper, Gravenstein, Maid en's Blush, Winter Bcarmain, c. Bears do well in this section. Mr. Cook, living near Helena in Ibc coun ty, has a good many in bearing. Says that the climate and soil is well adapt ed to all the hardy varieties. I do not know the varieties that he has. Cherries do well here. The Early Bichmond, May Duke, and others are raised successfully ; but the grape will take the lead in this county among fruits. Mr. Corson, Mr. Cook and Mr. Bell are tho-prlncipal grape grow ers in this county. Of the many va rieties grown by them tho Concord, Clinton, Isabella and Catawba, are the most reliable. I have the Concord and Delaware in bearing. I think the latter grape rather slow to fructuate, but an average bearer. There will be a small crop of Beach es this season, owing to most of the Beach orchards being planted on low ground. They were killed by the severe w inter at least a great many were. We need not expect to raise peaches successfully until we place our trees on high rolling land. All varie ties of small fruits do well here. In conclusion I can say that I think the farmen-3 of this county are taking a lively interest In raising fruit; at least they are taking the pains to plant out a great many fruit trees, with the expectation of realizing some good from .them, and I hope they will. Hoping that these few Lastly writ ten lines will be of some benefit to you, I will close. CYRUS DOUGLAS, Jlcc. See. Juhnson Co. Ag. Mcc. Society. . rrcbraslia Fairs.
