The value cf railroads to the farm
ing interest is fhown in a calculation
given by the American AricttZttaisf,
that to haul forty bushels of corn forty
miles on & wagon, costs at least $12 for
the team, driver and expenses. A
railroad would transport it for $4 at
it Allowing an averaging of forty
tufcbe! per acre, 8 per cent. As the
relative advantage is about the same
fcr ether crops, it Is clear that rail
road passing through a town would
add tX) per acre to the iralue of the
fcrms. A town ten miles square con-t-
as C2,0:D acres. An in crease of $100
Icr acre' Is equal to $6,400,030, cr en
ough" to build L"X miles of railroad,
even if itcott $1,000 per mile. But
p") miles cf road would extend thro'
twenty towns ten miles square, and
cost $10 per acre if taxed upon the
land. These figures are merely given
s an Cluitration. If thc-farmcrs had
taxed themselves to build all the rail
roads In tho country, and given them
away to any companies that would
stock and rtrr them, the present in
creased value of their land would have
well repaid the outlay.

and can be purchased almost any

Get thi3 grape. If you live far

In relation to the character of tbe WaUrr Grape I
have never indonwd the cbararfr or nefalne8 of
wines, or User articles of aT deaerlption.acd would
not at my prenent stare of liie were it not lor two
reasons which seem sufficient. First. I know tbe
h allrr Grape will meet tbe pre'iKunea widejtpread
throorboct th country, cauwl by tat wortiiian news
tn must locai.iiias of maiiy of its priece?ors. Heo
pnd, because I can say from personal obserra&on
tha the WailT fe the bt vaneiy I have bad any
knowl!:re vt. andj think I have ca'tivatetl nearly
ail that have been recommended, difjcardirc them
ail and Ikliine back tijjon the Conrord and Hartford
Proline as Tineyard varieties. I am Interested in
knowing tbat the frnit of the Valer grows larrer
each yrmr ax the vice rrowa older, being but year
Ailiy one-third lanrer than it w two vears ugo. It
grows weil : sets iru't wli. I Lsnre seen it npe sev

any mbdew m iw fruit or on its iaree and shack, but
I Via ware shaped foiiageu Tbe flavor of the fruit I
think supenor to any other variety. Yon say In

mate a wine of hii-b character. I have visited it

axoppun ht rer, wben tbe enastant rains pre
vented ail varieties from maturing at their osoal
time, but it perfected Its fruit by the middle of teep
ternoer. 1 be r&isins of th bist uentuxoed crop I
bavswen and eaten, whi were fr-.nl. From Its
