Board be authorized and requested to

State, that he will receive applications

ties from all parts of the State, and
will endeavor to supply all such ap
plications at the least possible cost to
the applicants, they paying postage,

In which von ak il I have any objections to sending
you, for publication, the fncts I am acquainted with.
In relation to the character of the Walter Orape, I
have never Indorsed the character or usefulness of
vines, or otberartides of any description, and would
not at my present stage of life were it not for two
reasons which seem sufficient. First, I know the
Waiter Graoe will meet the prejudices widespread
throuphnufthecouutry, caused by the worthlessnesw
in most localities of many of its predecessors. Sec
ond, tMX-attse I can any from personal observation
thut the liVitfer is the best variety I have had any
knowledge of. and I think I have cultivated neiu-ly
all that have been recommended, disnirding them
all and fulling buck uikki the Concord and Hartford
l'roMf.c as vineyard varieties. I am interested in
knowing that the lruit of tiie WnJtcr grows larger
each vear as the vine grows older, being last year
fully one-third larcer than it was two years nsro. It
grows well ; sets fruit well. I have seen it ripe sev
eral times before Hartford, aiul I have never seen
an v mildew on Its fruit or on Its large and thick, but
De'laware shapinl foliage. The flavor of the fruit I
think superior to any other variety. You say in
vour circular It is a seedling of the Delaware and
Diana; 1 think thechararter of each of these varie
ties U quite uistinifutsbable In the Walter, particu
larly that f the Ijclawnre. I Hltei think ft would
make a wine of hiph character. I have visited it
annuallv since it first bore, six years ago, three times
In Ulster Co., N. Y-. in a low valley, where the Isa
bella seldom ripens, and each time it was fully ripe
in Aujrust. I have seen it each of t he three past sea
sons in Pouclikeensie. ripening at the same time,
excepting hist yew. when the constant rains pre
vented ail varieties from maturing at their usual
time, but it tierfected its fruit by the middle of Sep
tember. The raisins of the last mentioned crop I
have sien and eaten, which were ttood. From its
sticceding in the low valley and tenacious clay of
Modena, antl also in uic ury aiuiey jh,;uou iu
I'oiighkeepsi'5. 1 think it will be well adapted to the
varied sections of our country. You may make
whatever use of these opinions yon deem proper.
