There is not a farmer who reads this
article that has not received ideas from
Home of his neighbors in relation to
the cultivation of certain crops that
are worth to him as muc h as the labor
of an entire year. Perhaps you are
raising something on your farm which
is twice as remunerative as the old
t-tandard productions, the introduc
tion of which is due to some entepns
Ing, liberal-minded man in your vi
cinity. The horse you drive to-day Is
a better animal by far, than the straight
necked, slow-paced nag that used to
drag you over the road. The fact Is,
Capt. Urown, who lives over on the
Iwll yonder, bought a fine stallion a
few years1 ago, and you arc enjoying
the gooo. Lnat uas-oome from ins m
troduction.. Your cows, too, give more
milk and make better beef .than those
you used to keep when you first set
tled on your present farm. You have
bought no new stock ; but Esquire
Kmith ran the risk of importing some
line Devons, and you have enjoyed
ice ui of them to Improve your own
herd. You can hardly distinguish
your animals from his .now, as they
feed in adjoining pastures.
You kept some hogs, too, in those
old days, the like of which you would
not tolerate now. You can remember
doubtless, when Col. Gates brought
homo from the State Fair, the first
Xh esters that had ever been in the
neighborhood. You thought he was
wild in paying fifty dollars for a pair
of spring pigs, when you would have
let him have any number for five dol
lars a pair, alout as good ones, too, in
your estimation. Put a year or two
convinced you of the difference. His
pigs ate less corn, but were, after all,
in the best order: they always looked
tat and plump, while yours resembled
walking lence rails.
In the matter of sheep and poultry,
too, there have been great improve
ments since you came into the neigh
borhood. The same, too, is true of
fruits and garden vegetables. Some
man has started off in making im
provements in some oue tiling, till
now, everything about the farm is
better, than a few years ago. lou
have been the gainer by other men's
ideas, money or enterprise. Have you
paid the debt? Is it not true that you
have waited to see what success at
tended their exertions, and then ap
propriated what you could of their
iruiu- unu lauurs, wiuioui- giving any
just equivalent, or doing anything in
return?
If this I? u," do not let the coming
season pass without doing something
to compensate otners lor what they
have done for you. If your means do
not permit you to purchase an im
proved bull, or to import a Norman
stallion, why, at least invest in some
fine poultry, and let your neighbors
have the advantage of them in cross
ing their own breeds. Don't be al
ways in debt for your ideas and for
the improvement of your crops and
the introduction of "blooded stock.
Look out the thing that your neighbor
is most deficient in, and bend your
energies in that direction. If you
cannot find a better kind of wheat or
corn than that raised there now, why,
procure a more productive grape vine,
or a more prolific rosebush. If your
knowledge of science is not sufficient
to enable you to make a scientific ex
amination of the capabilities of the
soil where you live, you can at least
test its adaptability for some new crop.
If you cannot underdrain your farm,
that others may see the advantages of
it, you can at least introduce the cul
ture of cranberries, and give to your
neighbors vines, and the benefit of
your experience. In short, pay your
debts, if not in the coin you received,
in something else that is as valuable.
Prairie Farmer.
IIoiv Sheep Drink.
There has been some- discussion
among writers as to how sheep get
water in winter. A writer to oue
of the patent office reports says :
"When sheep come up to the
water in cold weather, and they stand
by it and do not drink, it is lecause
they are afraid of getting their wool
Avet around their jaws ; and he says
he puts a plank over the water, with
holes in it, and then they would
drink." But he is rnUtaken, I claim
that Providence has provided'for the
sheep as well as for the horse. The
horse breaks the ice with his feet, and
the sheep gets water through as thick
ice as the horse can. The sheep melts
a hole through the ice with its breath.
I have seen them melt through ice
.three inches thick: and when that
man saw them stand by the waterand
would not drink, the sheep were going
through the process of getting water
in cold weather. They will stand by
running water and go through the
same operation, a though the water
was frozen over. I observed them
seven years before I knew why they
would stand by running water when
they were dry and did not drink.
This may be new to some, but it is
