Railroad up the West Hank of the HXIssoHri. There has been a general expression of the people in the counties in Ne braskabonrerinsoMlw Mhburi River in favor of the contemplated Railroad from Atchison, Kansas, to Omaha, Nebraska; and there is no doubt but that if a responsible aiid thorough company should take hold of the mat tcr, they could get much material aid from the counties and citizens of the State, All feel the importance of the road, and arc fully aware of the Im mense benefit a good railroad connec tion with St. Louis would-be t9 us on the river. Wc hope this matter will not be allowed to rest until the inter est which is irovr 'awakened is drawn towards other roads that seem to promise earlier relief. The people of the river counties are determined to have a railroad. If St. Louis will not second their efforts for the road they want, they will accept the proffered aid of the next lest road which proposes to "reach their interests. Then it may he too late for the river road when the counties and the State havejxhfifuted their means in a road of secondary importance merely be cause she was first in the field. If St. Louis thinks our trade worth contending for, now is the time to reach for it. when we are not only wil ling but able to assist in making the reaching easier. We shall writch this enterprise to see whether it means business or merely a desirefor business without the disposition to make what they want practicable. The people in this section are uneasy.- The innu ncrable cribs of corn, stacks of wheat, droves of cattle, and pens of hogs, sheep, etc., are uneasy for a sure ami earl y market. Rest is out of the ques tion. "Who, which or what is first to propose practical relief? Rooks and Periodicals. Tne Chicago Iyrjal Xacs, published weekly by Mrs. Myra Bradwcll, Chi cago, 111., at $J per year, is before us. It is a small sheet in quarto form, and it reports the legal news and judi cial opinions announced in important trials before various tribunals. It is a paper for the lawyer and the bnisness man, and surely every enterprising thinking lawyer will have it. We have received a late No. of the Western Jurist, published by Mills fc Co., Dcs Moines, Iowa, at $.1 a year. It is a monthly law magazine of real mcrrit. It gives a digest of the opin ions of tho-supreme bench of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and many other Statc3 in advance of the authorized reports, and in the more im portant easos it gives the opinion in full. It is the best law magazine for the western practitioner published, and one which no lawyer can atten tively read without profit. Mr. Kelley, of the Tecumsch Ga zctttc, has left at this office a copy of TltPrvrp'cs, a weekly paper in mag azine form, devoted to temperance, reform, literature, art, and general news, and published by Bennett, Greely fc Latour, 22 Spruce street, New York, at $2 a year. It is filled with a very interesting variety of reading matter. We should be pleased to see it generally circulated in this county. Mr. Kelly Mill act as agent. The Rev. Mr. Phillips, of Tecumsch, presented us with a -wry richly bound volumn of "Madison Avenue Lec tures." The volumn con tains eighteen lectures, delivered in the Baptist church, Madison Avenue, New York, by as many distinguished clergymen of that denomination. Their broad and thorough survey of the topics brought under discussion, and the general spirit of true christian courte sy which breath through them, give promise of wide usefulness. All wish ing for this or similardenominational works can obtain them by applying to Mr. Phillip.. Editor Advertiser :The Nema ha County Teachers Association met in the High School building at Rrown ville on the evening of the IGth inst. The large room in the building was well filled with an intelligent audience to listen to the lecture of Prof. McKcn rieupert Geography. It was an inter esting discourse. On the 17th the business of the-Association was transact ed." ; Isaac Black was elected President aud the other offices were properly filled by election. There were many of the best teachers of the county present, and we arc sorry to say that many were absent. Teachers institutes are acknowledged by all to be great aids to the true teacher,, still many who grant this to be true, will not spare the time to. at tend our meetings. They will- find in due season that this time they with hold will cost them dearl3, for the teavhers who show that they do not let an opportunity slip by for improve ment without reaping the benefit of all it offers, are already commanding from five to ten dollars a month more than these "cant spare the time" sort, who teach for want of others to take theit place.. Now, Bro., Shook, be careful and in no whit act in violation of the con stitution. The Yt'orld editorially says, that the Democratic party evidently has been injured by aspersions cast upon it through the indiscreet letter of Blair to Broadhcad, which has been success fully used by the Republicans. It says it is simple justice that the party should be cleared of these aspersions, and says the party, as a body, has no other means of clearing itself of this injurious imputation than by futile contradictions in its public journals, but there are individuals who can ex tinguish tin's calumny in a moment and silence it forever, and this must be done if we are to win this elsction. This is a time for plain talk and we bono we have spoken intelligibly enough for those whom it most con cerns, to take our meaning. The Herald says it has been decided to withdraw Seymour and Blair and the nominations to be given to Chase and John Quincy Adams. Belmont and other members of ths National Democratic committee meet Seymour at Utica to-day. All the Washington specials this morning state that a movement is on foot to withdraw Seymour and Blair and place Chase and Adams or Frank lin in nomination by the Democrats. The Commercial savs it is reported to-dav that Sevmour sent a letter of declination to Belmont. The Democrat says Gov. Seymour has written a letter placing himself in the hands of a National Committee. m : - St. Louis, Oct. 10. The Dcmoci'ctf Washington special says a new source of grief and tribula tion to the Democratic party in this district, has come in the breaking up of their soldiers' ami sailors' organiza- tion. This occured last evening, when Col. O Berne tiieir President, came out in a strong speech for Grant and Colfax, which it is hinted was inspired from the White House, and which re ceived the hearty indorsement of several members of the club. O'Beme is the Registerof Wills here, one of the President's most inti mate friends ; a leader of the conserva tive movements in and about Wash ington, and one of the most prominent Fenians in the country. The President has agreed to let the recent order concerning elections in the unreconstructed States drop en tirely, as he feels confident that Grant will be elected. Gen. Blair arrived here this noon and freely declares to his friends that he has written a letter to the effect that he is ready to withdraw from the field at any moment it is thoutrht bv the National Executive Committee, or party leaders, that the success of the party will be assured thereby; on the otner Jiaud, it is positively stated, by several of Gen. Blair'a friends that he has already resigned, and that his let ter has been in the hands of his father or the Democratic National Execu tive Committee- for a week past. Washington, Oct. lf. Mr. Randall wants to put up Mr. Joluison ; Mr. Browning thinks that Ewing should be in Blair's place. McCuIloch wants a change. Tom Florence, though a Chase man, says that it is too late and Rosecrans repeats it still more emphatically than ever. As for the Chief Justic, he regards the move ment as induced by a panic, and as one which cannot be consummated by any means now, as the command of the party, and he therefore anticipates no change. lie has said nothing, so far as can be learned, to lead any o those at work in this matter to hope that he will lend himself to it, on the contrary, his expressions both dis courasred them and almost destroved their hopes of any moral support from Mr. Chase.
