What I did last fall he sanc tioned by voting a part of the Inde pendent ticket. Although led farther than I desired, I yet think that a per macent rood wiil result from what then did. Believing that what I did micht affect the party disastrously. resigned my position to one straight- out and unwavering, rsow, presum ing that the Dr. really has the good of the iwirty at Heart, why does ne aN tempt to breed discord in the Republi can ranks? If to build up his paper, how insignificent is the trick on the eve of battle. If, a? he claims, he did all in his power then to silence the disaffection save voting why does he note ppring the question, on the eve of a tenfold more important contest? As to the "organ of the party' he might claim that for his paper a hun dred times, we d never dream or rais ing a question, leaving that to the in telligence of the party. The Dr. has taken a very bad time to sow discord, and with the above I hall leave him to his self-assumed task, hoping that the former unity of the party in this county will stand forth as conspicuous ly this fall, dispitehis puny efforts to the contrary. Camp Meeting. At the Quarterly meeting of the M. E. Church, held at Glen Rock July lSth, it was given out by Bro. Taylor that there would be a camp meeting held at Green's prove, four miles west of Peru, to commence Thursday. August 27th. la 2Sew York the tide of trade In the Dry Grxds line, is toward A. T. Steward's magni ficent suite of store rooms; in St. Louis, the drift of the Dry Goods trade is to Fourth and Fifth Street; in Cincinnati, lt is to Fifth Street, and Chestnut and Eighth Streets, in Philadelphia, is the centre of the Dry Goods world. Just as in Brownvllle, the tide of the Pry Goods and Clothing business constantly rets toward the magnificent stock kept by D. May, the Regular. To this stock will soon be added a large lot of splendid goods, such as the good Judgment of this thorough merchant will suggest, be is now eaM for goods, and win return, likely, during the coming week. Religious. The members of the First Bap tist Church of Brownvllle are requested to meet in the new church edifice, on the second Saturday in Aucutst. at 2 o'clock D.xru. to transact business relative' to receiving the Association, A W Moeqait. ITew Tailor Eh9p -Oiris Houbolt and A. Zech hare Just opened a Merchant Tailor shop in the room Just east of the City Meat Market. One or both of them can always be found at the County Clerk's Office, and who will make Deeds, Mortgages and all Instru ments of writting pertaining to conveying Land, as promptly, cheaply and neatly as can be done elsewhere. All are invited to the Republican Reading Room at the A dvertiter office, where they will find a full file of the ablest Republican papers of the land, and a few of the most afiluvious Democratic feheets. Again, we, for the club, invite citizens and strangers, of all political persuasions, to call op and enjoy a pleasant hour, in as pleasant a room, and with as wholesome company Republican papers as the city affords. Flag Raising. Quietly and unostenta tiously as even Gen. Grant could have desired it, the Republicans of this city last Saturday raised in front of their Club Room an Amer lean Flat;, with the names of Grant and Col fax for President and Vice-President. The Flag Is beaCtifully made of the best of Bunt lng, Is twenty feet long, and from the honee of Edmonds &. Co., Chicasro. This is but a small earnest of the zeal with which this Club will fight it out on this line." Improvements. As hot as it is the march of improvement does not stop in our city. Several new houses are going up in different portions of our city. B. B. Thompson, of the Brownvllle Dairy, is building a residence on Pacific, between Fourth and Fifth streets; Mr. Snider is building a residence on Nemaha between Sixth and Seventh: Wm. T. Den is putting a new roof on his barn, and R. V. Mulr is pushing his residence, on Second be tween Main and Atlantic, along as rapidly as possible. Thus it will be seen that In the way of building we are not standing stilL but un doubtedly making as much progress as any town along the river. "A Delay, Almost Our readers may be thankful for the appearance of the Democrat to-aay, ror tne ioiiowing reasons: one 01 tne most egotistical, bombaritical, vulnerable cal umniators, that ever uttered a monopylable, was spouting forth. In front of our office, last evening, to the detriment of our typos, mak ing use of the most gross abnurditle, such as ud only by the worshipers and followers of the modern Moses. The Devil." We thought the Democrat did not indulge in "personalities;" but the above paragraph undoubtedly refers to Mr. H. C Lett, who was, on this particular occasion, ably (7) ex pounding Democratic doctrines and princi ples. Now, we submit, this Is " devilish " un kind, especially when Mr. Lett treated the editor of the Democrat so leniently when he was a candidate on the Republican ticket for Council, three years ago ! DRY GOODS MARKET. Office CUicaw Journal of Commerce, Wednesday evening. July 22. j The market has ruled moderately active for the season, nd prices have been quit uni form, though firm. It is rather difficult, however, to detorniine what the course of the market will be when the fall trade shall be fairly Inaugurated. American Ielane8have opened at 2tc for new stvles, and are firm at the quotations. Old styles are selling at lac. GROCERIES. The market rules quietand prices firm with the high ruling of gold. Coffees higher. Su gars firm at quotations. The New York S?tipjHng List, in reviewing tbt state of trade for the past week, says: The market for Raw Sugars continues de- f ressed, and prices may be written a trine ower, closing weak and rather nominal. The heavy and gradually increasing stock, with large receipts yet to come forward from Cuba, bears heavily on the market, and hold ers, of late, swing no prospect of improve ment, have offered their stocks more freely ; hence the declining tendency of market val ues, as in the absence of more demand from the country for either Raw or Rehned. there is no inducement on the part of the trade or rehners to buy beyond their immediate and now quite moderate wants. LUMBER MARKET. The market on Thursday opened with i steady demand, with prices tirm and un changed-from the closing rates of last week's report.
