Ncbraalea Sltmcdisci PROWXYILLE, TECRSDaY, JUNE 18, 19G3. igriculturaL Department. Tl- W. FURNAS, EDITOH. CllHon Clab Proceedings. Clifton. Nib., May 29, 'OS- Mr. Editor: The first meeting cf the Club, under the new arrangement, was held at Mr. Julius Gilbert's to day. At tecdence was not general. Tweaty-cne persons present Secretary absent on business. . Pro tem called on to report. Inquiry was made for the best method of destroying the ground squirrel that digs up newly planted 'corn. Reply: Cut off the points, of a lot of pumpkin or squash seed ; open the eiT by pinching with the thumb and finger, put in a grain cf Strycknine, scalier-them where the squirreli dig. This can be practiced where hens or turkeyi run for they will not eat these eeeds. In our walk over the farm we no.ticed that Sir. E. bed aiteld. o. the largest corn seen by any member tnis season. Ii has been kept very free from weeds, but a part of it at the expense cf -being worked when to wet. , Wheat and cats look fine. The profit of the potato crop is seriously cut down by the Colorado Fotato Bug. Is there any way to rid the yines cf them better than hand picking? Mr. G. has caved his Tines in this way. We next saw some fruit trees brought from Illi nois this spring ; they, looked sorry, so did the owner. How weald it do to have cur. bread baked in Illinois? .We could export-tilled--corn- to pay.-- Mr. G would tiva had 'plenty cf apple trees cf his own raising had Dot the Grasshoppers eaten thera as fast as they come up. : After the walk on the farm the boys, some of them near forty years of age, played ball. Then came one cf Mr. Gil bert's cuppers Adjourned Uo meet- in two weeks, (Friday .June 12ih,) at the house of "Benton Aldrich. Invitation to all. Yours truly, Pno Tem. Eeglon Round About. " Mat 29, 1SGS. .Mr. Editor : I notice, in your paper cf 'May 2Sth a communication from the secretary of the newly resurected Clifton Farmers Club, which flattend out early in the spring, cr, perhaps," exploded. Sickness in the neighborhood, which oc cured some weeks after the Club had ceased to breathe, affords a very.plau sable excuse for its suspension to those tvho do not know the circumstances. I hardly know whether to be more amused than provoked at the construction put up on my former article. We expect a man to wear the coat thai fits him, but realy they have "kicked befcre they were spurred." The only allusion I made to the members cf the Club, was that the Club had -"flattend out," which, I have been informed cn good authority, was the ca'se. In fact if personal applications were to be made, perhaps, my own sur roundings would net bear close inspec tion. Although, as Mr. II. says, of the members of his club; I have "put out rny own nurserry of fruit trees, sucli as Apple, Teach, Pium, Pear, and the email fruits in great variety, besides Ev ergreens, Forest Trees, and Grape vines." And I have my horses protec ted from the bleak winds and cold .storms cf winter ; which, to say the least, is more humane than to have them exposed to all the sudden changes peculiar to Nebraska. And again, though I do not wish to praise myself or condemn others, I would say that if I borrow a machine or tool, as is sometimes necessary, and it is injured while in my possession, I have it repaired at my own expense as quickly as possible, as I do not wish any one to suffer loss by accommodating me. lily object in writing the former article (for which I do not claim entire origion ality,) was to present, as I thought, in a good natural way, the blackest, eide of what Mr. H. calls the "hog hominy sys Icttj." of farming, (a rather ineligant term, and one to which I am not accus tomed.) In so doing I should as soon Lave expected to be charged with slander from any one else as from the Clifton CluV Although there is much intel ligence add enterprise among the farmers cf Clifton and the Regions round about, . still it cannot be denied that there is room I fox improvement, as a lady member of the Club truly remarked, t'JIeddlescmo is xot. muxh "of .a -man,'? . etill -he desires to see the work of im provement go on end is heartily, glad to see the Farmers Club ."alive and kick ing once more," and he -wishes it success.
