We this week run up at ead of
our columns, as cur standard" bearers, the
ccroineesof tbe late Republican Ccnven
lion. Senator Tipton, orne time since,
eu-f-ested to us the propriety cf declar
ivg fcr General Grant for Present and
for JJenj. F. Wade for Vice-President.
If we were publishing a paper er-pecially
devoted to '.Laividual interests, we ehculd
eince have yielded lo our inclina
tions as well as to the lo'icitaticns of
our friends, by indicating our preferences
for the several offices to be filled the
ccming fall; but engaged as we are in
publishing a nftrjpaper, we did net wish
to pre judge the question, or forestall tLe
judgement cf the people, by any prema
ture arrangement cf our own, but rather
await the official response of the Repub
lican Convention.
As ta- principles and governmental
policy, we have deep convjetiens and de
cided preferences; as to men. there are
hundreds of good Republicans between
whom there is but little to choose. In
deference to the will of the majority, we
ccw take our position as well as to men
bs to measures. We are cow umram
elled by a previous record, and can take
advantage of a good breeze to tail out
into the troubled waters with a barque
manned and rigged for vallian't service.
Our Congressional and State Ticket is
a strong one, composed of tried men
whose past record give3 them immense
prestage before the people. The public
pulse of this vigorous and growing Slate
is throbmg anxiously for the contest.
Republicans are alive lo the national
issues which are ccce more to receive an
endorsement at their hands the ccmirg
fall, by a majority certain to exceed three
thousand in the thoroughly Republican
Stale cf Nebraska.
The delegation for the First Judicial
District at the State Convention in Ne
braska City convened in the Recorder's
office, aud organized by the election of
Hon. E. S Dundy as Chairman, who
ttated that the object of the convention
was the nomination of a District Aitor
ney. - On motion an informal ballot was ta
ken, which resulted in
O. B. Hewett receiving six votes.
Itham Revis four
Capt. Humphrey " fcur "
C. W. Seymour " four
S. E. McCracken four "
Several other ballots were had with
rarying results, when on motion, it was
resoWed to drop- the candidate after the
next ballot who received th6 lowest
number of votes, and so continue to do
until one of the candidates should receive
n majority. Mr. McCracken was first
dropped, iflr. Seymour next, Mr. Revis
next, and on the fifteenth ballot O. B.
Hewett received twelve votes, and Capt.
Humphrey ten. Whereupon Judge O.
B. Hewett was declared the nominee by
acclamation.
Besides the regular delegation to the
State Convention from Nemaha county,
we noticed Jno. L. Carson, William H.
Hoover, Geo. W. Fairbrother, Hun. R.
W. Furnas, Hen. O. B. Hewett, Hod. S.
M.Rich, DeForesi Porter. Wilson E Ma
jors, W. D. Blackburn and Benj. Rogers.
We clip the following well merited
praise of oar c-ndilt fnr Distrirt .At
torney, from the Omaha Republican of
the 2nd iost;
Judge Hewett, the nominee in the
first district, is a citizen of Brownville,
and a prominent Republican of the
southern pcri' "f llie State. He has
serf ltle public in several public capac
jaes ; is a lawyer of alilny; aLd ihere
is no question but he will prove an effi

John Shoultze, a German living near
Rulo, tock his axe and team to the tim
for a load of rails on the 20:h of April.
His neighbors being alarmed as he did
not return, found his team hitched at the
hind end of the waon in the timber, and
found the axe near by and a quantity cf
blood. The search for Shoultze wa3 con
tinued through Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. His hat was found three
miles frcm the team, in some willow
buhes near Judy's wood yard. On Fri
mcrning a further search was made.
The lrack of a man passing into the river
and then out, was trailed across the bot
tom some distance to a clump of trees,
where it seemed a horse had been
hitched. A track from this toward the
river was then found. While trailing
this track they found a puddle of blood,
say about a quart, near the river. The
sheriff arrived with a skiff, and after
dragging the river near where the hat
was found for some time, they brought
the body to the surface of the water,
which was easily identified.
