cf this character should be freely tued
in the general planting, but wo now
wish to speak cf those things which ore
left to individual effort. Among the
evergreens we include the European Ivy,
'cne cf the tucst useful of them all.
There the custom prevails cf making a
xnound ever the grave, it can be covered
with a dense mantle cf living green by
the use cf a few plants cf Ivy. Most of
the Junipers are useful, and give u3 a
reat variety inhight, from the Prostrate
Juniper, which lies fiat upon the ground,
to moderate sized trees. The Tcrreya
cf Florida is hardy at the North and
makes a beautiful, large shrub. The
JDwarf Pine (Pinus pumilio) and some
other low'growing kinds, are useful.
. The different Arbor Vilcosgive us quite
a variety in color and size. The Golden
Arbor Viico (Biota oricrdalis aurca). is
most beautiful, and our native Arbor
Vhx ( Thuja occidental is) has varied so
much that we have a dozen or so of
named varieties. The Yews, which have

t Nothing which the farmer produces is
of quicker sale than eggs and poultry.
The prices which he receives therefor
lars in the main remunerative ; the labor
incut red is light and agreeable, and
can be performed ty the junior members
cfhis family. The poultry yard produces
food which is highly palatable and nu
tritious at all seasons, and in this respect
is hardly equalled by any other depart
ment of the farm. Is it not worth while,
tHen, to bestow more care and skill ia
'managing the poultry? Left to themselves
half their products are often wasted, and
half the year they are non-layers. In
winter they need simply warmth, light
und sunshine, clean, rccmy quarters,
K and plenty of fcod. Every day they
will pay fcr this. Ia the summer they

Potato Expiiiimest. S. N.
Beers,
cf Fairfield, Conn., writes to the Amtri
cam JlcrricjJluri&i: "I planted side by
ide, cl the Early Goodrich variety, let,
sets or cuttings rnaae entirely ircm tne
seed ends of insdium-sized potatoes, the
cuttings containing about two eyes each
and planted two in a hill; 2nd two-eye
cuttings, made entirely from the stem
ends cf potatoes ; 3d, wholtlargz potatoes.
The whole potatoes came up first, and
kent about a week ahead of the others
through the season. Between the cut
tings made from the seed and stem ends,
no difference could be perceivd either
through the season or when they were
dug. If the cuttings from the tip3 had
consisted of as large pieces as these made
from the buts, it might have been differ
ent, but as the eyes were thicker oa that
end, they could not be made so . large.
But when the rows that were planted
with whole and large seeds were dug, it
was found that the yield was one-seventh
larger by measure, but that the increase
was mainly in small and unmarketable
potatoes, and that the large one3 were
not as smothe in appearance as the other
rows; 1 also tried cuttings from the
seed and stem ends of the Hanson,
side by side, saw no difference."
Save tiie Eaeliest. Yre have
oiten advisea tnose who save tneir own
seed to select the earliest and best. "J.
C. C," of Wickford, Ii. I., a gentlemen
who gives us a case in point, though at
the advacod age of 87, still keeps up an
interest in gardening. "I have cultivated
one kind of pees, called the Earley Junes,
thirty-two years, and have the : date of
planting and first picking each, year
The last ten years they have averaged
four and a half days earlier than the
first ten, which I attribute to the method
of selecting the seed. Instead of saving
all that grows on a portion cf the viaes,
I save the flru setting of the whole, and
pick them as sooa as fully ripe. The
Early Junes are very prolific, grow about
o 1-2 feet high, and have not increased
ia bight since the first planting. Of the
many varieties of "Extra Earley's," an
nually adverted, I have, tried several
scrt3 in crdd to get aa calier kind, but
all my trials have proved failures. The
