ReckleES Drlflng. This practice,
too frequent in our city at present, must
be put a stop to or some person will be
maimed for life. Within the past week
two children have been run over in the
city limits. Though neither was more
than bruised,- which 'Was not from -any
foresight in the drivers, the practice is
a nuisance and should be abated.
Merit usualy judged by success, and
where true merit exists success is bound
to follow us a natural consequence. No
better illustration of this axiom exists
than the firm of Theo. Hill & Co.: of this

city. Theo. Hill is, in the true sense of
that term, 'a self-made man." .He
commenced business in this city 'with but
small capital, yet with enterprise and in
tegrity which made success inevitable.
To these qualities are yte indebted for
the pleasure cf calling public attention
to one'of the largest Dry Goods and
Grocery establishments in the West.
Louis Hill,, the junior , member ,cf the
firm, is already ranked among ihe . lead

er, a more complete stock, a greater va
riety of goods, more reasonable prices, or
more liberal men to dear with cannot be
found west of the Missouri river.
Jht ElCCtlOD. last Tuesday, passed
of quietly in this city. The polls were
crowded all day. and great enthusiasm
prevailed, yet he lull vote was not cast
by 132. 560 votes were registered and
only 42S rules cast in the Trecinct. Al
though the Registration was as complete
as possible, yet about fifteen voters were
missed. We will have in this Precinct
by nex FalPs election at least S00 votefs.

As an instance cf Western energy in a
new direction, we would call attention to
he, above- Company. Within the last
year they hare erected, on the then uh
hrnLpn nrairie. four' miles' west of
Chicago, a flourishing and lastelul lew'i
England village of fifty house, a mag-
nificent factory, emplovins 150 hands,
turning cul.1000 'cfocks per .week. The
Company, like General Grant, one of its
stock-holders, have thought it be st to fight
out the success of Western manufacturl
ers against Eastern wealth, and monopo
ly "on this line.
The great Northwest cannot; always
send er rich products- a thousand miles
and pay tribute to the East on her man
ufactured goods. .
Hitherto the Eastern States have grown
rich in receiving our products at low
rates andsending us high priced fabrics
therefor. Every man, woman and child
of Connecticut has earned $1-50 fo 50
cents of this'same population of Illinois,
and so it'must be till the West manufac
tures her own gouds. and enterprises like
this which takes our raw material (much
cheaper here than east) and produces a
line of goods' which. 'find their principal
market; in-ihe west should receive. our
hearty support.. The money paidthem
enriches and builds up the west..','.1'' .
jThis new Company makes from West
ern materials immense quantities of
German silver and sheet brass (the only
goods of the kind manufactured west of
Connecticut.) and fifty designs of clocks,
bejautifully finished, many of them new,
and especially suited to the Western mar
ket, f heir regulators as well as corn-
