Kennard, bee. or btate. Our Scliools- Among the many evidences of thrift and prosperity with which our county abounds it is gratifying to notice that our School interests are being cared for by one of our best educators. By the late revision of our School Law Wm. R Hoover, our papular County Clerk is clothed with the usual powers of a C umy Superintendent. He has dep utised Judge Hewett, a graduate of Bow doine College, Me., and an old resident of this County, to discharge the duties. From the Judge we learn that there is a lively sense of the importance of eood school buildings and conducted Schools throughout the county among o people. That there are now about forty School Districts in Nemaha County, nearly all provided with, good, substantial school buildings, twelve of which have been erected during the past year. That the people are out growing the antiquated idea that a log pen, three-legged stools, a birch rod and a teacher with plenty of energy to use it an just sufficient knowl edge to gain a certificate from the Su perintendent, are all that is necessary for their children in an educational point of view. Oor educational interests demand of the Statea more systematic management and a more intelligent understanding on the part of parents and school managers of what belongs to a good and well pro- vided school room, and our experience has taught us that a more perfect, union nnd'eombination of skill among educators and school committees can best be accom plished through the agency of well paid State and Coun'y Superintendents ; and, until provision is niacin by law for these offices ap competent salaries fixed, our school interests will materially suffer, We hope, our County Commissioners will be eq'jal to the emergency andj pro vide such a compensation as ill justify the Judge in prosecuting his lat.ors as the interests of our schools demand. We corpMally invite the Judg to use our col umns as a means of communication be tween himself aud, the teachers, parents lana school comaiiuees. , a . . The. , work on the Council Bluffs and St. Joseph Railroad is being pushed with energy at both ends of the line. Mr Aaron Bedford, of this ci'y, has a contract for furnishing1, by the 1st of March next, the tis for sixteen miles of this road in Atchison and Holt coun ties. The road will be completed by the first of July next. It will be a road of some importance to the citizens of Ne braska, yet this will depend in a great me8sure upon the locatiou of jhe Depots. If they are close to the river th freight to and from Nebraska will naturally seek that route, otherwise it will be transport ed by the river as heretofore. We pre sume'the managers of the road will take this. fact into consideration in dermihing the matter ; western produce and mer chandise for one hundred miles west of this point will be carried on either this road or the river, while neither route does now, or ever will, obtain freight east of this road for over thirty miles. In this view of the case the officers will be but consulting their own interests by looking after ours. A word to the wise is sufficient. Italy The I'.alian Government finds itself absolutely unable to execute the Conven tion. To struggle against Mazzini and Garabaldi would be to attempt the im- t ... possible. Garabaldi had only 4000 men at the battle of Monte Rotonda; the Papal aud French forces amounted to 6000. The battle lasted nearly three hours, when Garabaldj was taken prisoner and his forces gave way. He is to b'e iried in Florence. Seward offers him an Asy lum in ihe United States. : ... . A Florence paper says: King Victor Emanuel having fulfilled all the obliga tions imposed upon Italy by the Semtero-. ber Convention now demands of Empe t6t Napoleon- the . departure of Frthh troops from Italian soil . and recalling of the French fle'ee frcm the Italian coast, It also says that the King firmly pro tests to the French Emperor against a European Conference composed only of Catholic powers for the settlement of the" Roman qcesiicd. i Tnc State Keren!
