THE CHICAGO CONVENTION.
The National Democratic Ccnvtntion
that met in Chicago cn the 29th cf Au
gust, was the largest and most enthusi
astic meeting ever held ia that citv. Its
proceedings were harmonious, and re
sulted in the adoption of a thoroughly
peace platform, and the nomination of
Gen. McClellan, for President, and Geo.
H. Pendleton, fur Vice-Preudent.
We have" not yet seen any notice cf
the acceptance of McClellan, ye; there
is no doubt that he will; but from the
striking contrast between ths tone of the
Convention and the principles we believe
Gen. McClellan to have ever acted upon,
we cannot see how he is to accept the
nomination without repudiating the whole

all.

' as there is an overwhelming force being

a policy towards the masses of :hep:ople
as will serve to aleniate them frutc the
Confederacy, and freely pardon all who
voluntarily return to their allegiance,
except the leaders cfthe rebellionwho
punihed according to the nature of their

The Co::3ti:ution is the Charter cf
Liberty to thj human race, and it is far
better that every American cf this gen
eration should sanctify it with his blood,
ihan that it should be overthrown; and a
government based upon thy last relict and
worst feature of birbarhm erected in its
. dead.
Since the outbreak of the war we have
been indentified with no party, but the
. ,arm$ ; and to that alone can we ever
look for peace. Cut in entering upon the
field cf politics again, it is not difficult
for us to take the National Platforms of
the different parties, and from them, and i
N . the men rlaced upon their tickets, de-
j cide where we stand.
All the diibyal element of the free
V Siaies has united itself with the Demo-
cratic party, and at their late Convention
at Chicago, adopted a platform by which
they claim to be unswerving ia their
vdelity to the Union, yet indulge in the
"t vituperations ngshft the Adminis

vi'ate armistic, and peaco ; when
now that peace obtained from the
bj treaty must he upon the basis
independence, and the cession to
v all the territory of the border
.States, and making ourselves and
iildrcn their slave cstchers and' de

.'uinated Maj-Gen. McClellan, for the

y As a soldier we have ever had the most
j profound respect for McClellan, and be
j lieve him loo good a patriot to endorse
j' . one word cf this platform, r one parti-
cle of ihe proceedings of such a conclave
as " ihe Chicago Convention has proved
itself to be. .
With such nn element to con;end with
in the election in November, it is essen-
tial that all loyal men should be unit A
oa one man, and energetic in their efforts
to elect him, and we sincerely regret that
a small faction should devide the party,
and place ia the field such a man as Fre

but total failure.
