state bf our pulse, and out condition" and
prospects. On the 18th day of Juue we
left St. -Joseph" "on the good steamer
Fanny Ogden, and after more than the
usual amount of stops detentions and de
lays, we arrived at St. Louis on the 23d,
wher we remained only long onough-to
remove our b'aggage and men from the
Fanny Ogden, to the Imperial, and leav
ing the same day we arrive! .at this
place on'tha 23Mt of June.
- New Madrid, New Madrid Co. Mis
souri, is a small town composed of scat
tered frame houses, and is about the size
of th-e village. of. Sonora., Atchison Co.
Mo., which it also resembles in appear
ance and location. It is situated upon a
wiJj1 bottom upon the--"Jubiiialpj.i iu;
rounded by woods and' swamps. The
water i3 bad, the best water which can
be obtained, being from ttre Mississippi
river, end the location of our camps ap
pears unhealthly, how our boys will get
along here remains to te tested. The
swamps in this region some fifty or sixty
miles back are said to be infested with
guerillas, but they are reported to be so
hidden in the morases that they are near
ly inaccessable. It is reported that Gen.
Davidson with the army of S. E. Mo.,
have lately had a brush, with Price and
Marmaduke near Bloomfield Mo. about
fifty miles from this place, aud routed
them completely, and are now on their
march for this place. . How long we
shall remain here, I cannot even guess,
but it is generally supposed that we shall
stay here two or three months, as a post
is to be established and fortifications put
up at this point. $,This was formerly the
theater of JefT. Thompson's military
operatious: cannon balls, fragments of
bomb shells and other implements of war
and evidence of it3 existence are to be
found scattered in every direction. In
digging a trench yesterday in the" forti
fications, oue of the boys disturbed the
remains of an individual clad in butter
nut, who undoubtedly, r to use the lan
guage cf the Ethiopian hymns:
"Died on the f;uld of battle,
Glory in biz sou!."-
.Our( company had; an unsuccessful
scout yesterday, of over twenty miles,
without having the happiness, as Orpheus

confederacies."
Oar time, when the little formalities
of drill, guard and fatigue duty are got
orerr i3 principally deyoted to fishing,
svvirriming and laying ia the shade; and
take it on an average we are enjoying as
much iioiium cun dignilaie" as a poor
devil of a private, whose services are
worth but thirteen dollars a month, can
be expected to, when every brainless dis
gusting snob, is swelling with the im
mense importance of a second liutenancy.
, They are raising 9 colored regiment,
here, and hereabouts and I have a strongi
notion to apply for a commission; the on
ly objection I have, which seems to nn;
to ba insurmountable, is that the super
lative contempt with which I regard tho
whole shoulder strap aristocracy forbid
me to associate with them, and more
especially to merge the manly indepen
dence "I feel as a corporal, in the gas
eous inflation and arrogance incident up
on minor military honors, though amel
iorated and refined by association. with
the humble Ethiopian".
