Omaha, N. T., June 21.
Da. G. C. Monell,
Gfiainnann Ter. Rep. Committee:
Dear Sia : Your communication invit
ing "the concurrence of the Democratic
Territorial Committee" in the political
action proposed by the Republican Com
mi'tee of the Territory, and to unite in a
call for a ''common Convention," ia be
fore me. In reply, I have to say that
the Democratic Committee did not meet
on yesterday, in conformity with . the
appointment, a quorum not being present,
;.ud it is. not probable that a requisite
number can be convened iu consequence
of the absence of several from the Terri
tory. I therefore find myself alone in
the consideration of the important ques
tion you have presented. .
While I most heartily sympathize with
the patriotic sentiments of the Republican
Committee, and recognize the paramount
importance of ."maintaining our glorious
Union, and establishing permanently the
power and perpetuity of our Constitution,
as organized and adopted by the founders
of our Government, our fathers of the
Revolution" yet I have no authority, as
Chairman of the Pemocratic Territorial
Committee, to entertain, favorably or
otherwise, the proposition you have rub
milted of committing the Democratic
party of Nebraska to the "unconditional
support of the general policy of the Ad
ministration." The few members of our Territorial
Committee with whom I have been able
to confer, agree with me that a Conven
tion of the Democracy of the Territory
only can determine the policy of the party
in ihe approaching electian. When that
Convention meets, tht political action
proposed by the Republican Committee
will doubtless receive that consideration
which its importance. demands. ' .
Very' rtplctfidly, your's, S-C-.

impose' upon :
" Ascher Ss. Co., of Indianapolis, have brought out a
small, trashy book, iu cheap form, purporting to be my
"Lite, Speeches and Addressee," connected with my
troubles among the Secessionists. This ia bogus pro
duction, doing tne reit injustice, and by. no means
reparting me correctly, either as to. my history or
speeches since 1 came Vortb. I am now 'prepariupt a
genuine book of tbe kind, and will have it out in a few
days, published oy Geo. W. Child, of Philadelphia.
Applexate &- C j.; of Cincinnati,' are the publishers for
the West. I caution the public agalnt the bogus con
cern, as I Fball at once commence le.ul proceedings
against all concerned in vending it as well as the pub
lisher. W. G. EHOWNLOW. .
