iuucn nas teen saii cf late in refer-
ence to coffee growing ia Illinois. Wre
have taken the pains, and gone to the
expense of procuring a small supply of
tne seed. Dr. Jno. A. Warder, an
eminent botanist, cf Cincinnati, Ohio,
has examined the seed, thus speaks of it:
"An examination of the seed shows
it to be a Vetch, Natural order Viccc,
genus Ciccr,i'rom the Greek word,
Inker, foro or strength. Hence, the
Cicerons hnj their name from the
Pulse, or dccrt which they ate as the
Pisons.from the Peas, (Pisum,) which
constituted their food, and the Lentuli,
from their Lentils, v. Don.
This plant belongs to the Lannean
system, DiadelphiaDiandria, described
J by Don, as an annual herb. The spe
cies to which these seeds belong is the
Cicer arietinum, the Chick Pea, a na
tive of Syria, Egypt, Italy and the
Levant. It is found among corn, (or
grain.) The seed has a projecting
chick, and is corrugated, hence, the
name, from the resemblance to a ram's
head. It is eatable raw or cooked.
Sow in drills in the spring.
There are three other species of
Ciscr, (pronounced seeser,) the C.
Songarium, the solonicusa, and the
nummulifolia. The C. arietinum ex
udes oxalic acid from its glands. It
is mentioned in the U. S. Patent
Office Report for 1864, under its
Spanish name of Garbanzo, and was
distributed as an eatable Legume.
Vide p. xvi, D. J. Brown's Report, I
find no reference to its use as coffee,
but suppose it might answer as well as
other peas as a substitute. Major
Lackland of this city informs me that
it has been so used in Canada.

A very small supply of the seed are
