Temperance Sleeting a meeting
of the citizens of this place was held at
he Presbyterian Church, on the evening
cf the 15th, to consider the expediency of
organizing a society for the purpose of
promoting the temperance cause in the
city. The following resolution was pas
red: Resolved, That we are in favor of or
ftiizin a local. society in this place, for
the purpose of suppressing intemperance
tad promoting public order."
A committee, consisting of Messrs.
Burch, Hoadley, Bobbins, Holladay and
Hewett, were appointed to prepare a con
stitution suitable for the Society, and re
port the same at a subsequent meeting
to be held at the same place on this eve

nan, who withstood, not only the temp
tations of those who had been so long his
warm-hearted friends in the South, but,
with a handful of half-starved men, stood
up and battled so bravely, with the fear
ful odds of more than a thousand to one,
to protect the flag of his country. See

Pleasant Serenade. On Tuesday
night the residences on upper Main street
and thereabouts were fortunate in being
favored with a rather new style Serenade.
The company was composed of young
ladies, under the guardianship of "Con"
and the "old school-mistress." The style
we confess is rather to be admired. The

We are informed that the gateway
within which these eleven likenesses are
represented, is a faithful copy of the
sculptured gateway at Karnac, Egypt,
only substituting Masonic emblems for
hieroglypicical symbols. It is copied from
a photograyh in Frith's Views of Egypt.
This Gateway is about sixty feet high.
It was built under Ptolomy Energets, a
bout three hundred years before Christ.
As this was only about three hundred
years after the building of Jerusalem,
and Nehemiah, it doubtless presents as
nearly as may be, a representation cf the
gateway of that renowned city.
Our masonic friends and others who
desire to examine the above will call at
our ssnctura. The whole picture is 25
by 27 inches in size.
