improved in many respect. It was the first and is at
the present time the only newspaper permanently es
tablished in the Ricky Mountain Gold Region. Tran
sported to thi country in the face of a disheartened re
turning emigration, wuh a tide almost irre&istabte, It
was set up beneath the pelting oi winter storms, in the
midst of noisy mobs howling curses, and threats or veu
neance against every person aud thing that ventured one
enoouragiBg word ror the country ; at a time when the
man was iortunate who knew one day from whence his
meals for the nest would come; it was successfully es
tablished, and hat since continued in the even tenor .of
its way, fearie and untranimeied.

for which the abuse of the Eastern press was heaped up
