An iron spire is about to be erected on
a church in Pittsburg. This will be the
first construction of the kind in the United
States, and it is fitting that it should be
put up in the "Iron City." This church
(St. Philornena's Catholic) has now a
brick tower 100 feet high, which is to be
carried upG-5 feet higher, and upon it will
be erected a beatiful cast iron spire So
feet high, exclusive of the cross that will
crown the apex. The style is to be per
forated Gothic of the middle ages. Tt
will cost about $10,000. There are now,
it is stated, but two church spires in the
world that are made of Iron, viz : at Vi
enna and Frankfort-on-the-Main.

is thus described : Upon a silver base is

one side of the base, and at the end upon
a square, a statue of the great Napoleon

is flying, which, bending forward, forms
the "vibrating arm of the machine, the
needle being in the beak of the royal bird.
The plate of the machine is of highly
