California Items.
Our correspondent "Wyreka" has fur
nished us a file cf late California papers,
from which we dip the following items :
The San Francisco Uniun contains the
Message of Gov. Weller, sent to the two
Houses of the Legislature. It is long,
but considering the number of subjects
treated could not well hare been made
shorter. Its recommendations are judi
cious, its suggestions commendable, and
its tone and language such as are appro
priate in an important public document.
The Legislature may safely be set down
as Democratic. The Senate consists of
35 members, and stands 31 Democrats, 4
Republicans; the Assembly has 80 mem
bers, out of which 8 are Republicans.
The Union in speaking of the arrival
of the Central Overland Mail, says :
The Central Overland Express, with
the President's Message, arrived in this
city on January 1st, bringing letters from
St. Louis to December 9th. The mail
left St. Joseph, Mo., December 14th, and
Salt Lake, December 2oth, arriving at
Placerville on the morning of January 1st,
making- the time from the former city in
seventeen days being the quickest time
that was ever made overland by any route.
The contract time of this route is well
known to be thirty-eight days ; the time
made by this mail is less than one-half of
this limit.
The following items Ave find In the
Golden Era
A. Suction Well at Stocktox. For
some time past an experiment has been in
progress of boring for water in Stockton
to be used in case of fire, instead of build
ing cisterns. It appears that a bore of
seven inches diameter was sunk to the
depth of ninety-seven feet. The result
of the operation was entirely successful.
The Eureka Engine played out of the
hole,, but did not exhaust the water. The
cost of the well and the suction is said to
be cheaper than the building of cisterns.
. The Sierra Gap. We are informed
that several persons who attempted to
pass.from Downieville over the Sierra
Nevada Mountains by the Sierra Gap,
were obliged to return recently, and go
to Carson Valley via Placerville. They
met 'with snow so deep that it was impos
sible to- proceed except with snow shoes.
.; Settlers. and Mixers at Knight's
r erry.-t A recent meeting was held at
Knight's Feny by certain parties for the
alleged purpose of taking measures for
protecting themselves from the encrcach
rhents of a certain floating land grant,
which has been located upon the adjoin
ing lands. They formed an anti-Grant
League, and resolved to stand by each
other in . opposition to bogus Spanish
grants. -
Tunnel tubocch the Sierra Neva
da. James Petlinger suggests that, a
tunnel for the Pacific Railroad should be
made through the Sierra Nevada, low
down, and he thinks the gold found would
pay the expense of boring the hole.

The Nevada Journal says:
E. B. Johnson, of Little York, laid oil
our table, on -Monday last, a fine speci
men of cement and gold from the Blue
Lead, owned by him. The lead is work
ed 'with powder, which breaks up the ce
ment in lumps, in which state it is taken
lb the stampers. A mill of eight stamps
is kept crushing the gravel cement conti
nually. It nays about 53 per ton. A few-
days ago a rich spot in the lead yielded
upwards of SSO to the single pan. Ihe
irold is of a very fine quality.
The Jenny Lind Company took out of
their claims, at Hunt's Hill, last week,
S 14, 000, the fruit of four day labor.
The Orville Record contain the follow-
in:
We are told that some Spaniard, who
own and are working a.qnaru lead ttt&T
that of the '49 and '56 Company, at Yan
kee Hill, found a lump of pure . gold in
their ledge, one day this week, weignin
between seven and eight pounds. If the
"matrix" of all California eold don't lie
somewhere about Yankee. Hill we -should
like to know where it does lie. '
The subjoined item is from the-.Har

The'extfeme cold weather, for the fast

this. section from prosecuting .their works,
and consequently but little croli has beta

roots cf the disease by purifying the blood, and changing
the secretions in the system, thus removing the cause.
which renders the Cure certaiit and permanent. '

Persons who have long been afflicied with scrofula old
sores, tetter, ringworm, scald head, blotches, eruptions
of the skin, and all cutaneous diseases, are advised to

Easterly's Iodine and Sarsaparilla.' The Iodine and
Sarsaparilla f urifles the blood, and causes the wres to
discharge their putrid matter, and the ointment heals
