SIXTY-SEVENTH YEAB!
mciuuati Gazette
FOE 1859.
Among the leading political doctrines, which it will
be tbc const ant aim of the Gazette to advance, with a
view to their ultimate success through a change of the
Administration, will be
Opposition to the Policy and Acts of the Pierce and
Buchanan Administrations, (identical in character)
sanctioned and euportcd by the Democratic Party, and
the responsibility cf which, as a Party, it has fully as
sumcd; A general Reform in Government Expenditure; and
the introduction of strict Ectnomy in all its depart
ments; '
The old Clay Whig doctrine of a Tariff for Revenue
and ditcrimination for Protection the soundness,
expediency, and Justice of which even the Democratic
Party, after nearly a quarter of a centnry of blundering
experiments, are coming to acknowledge ;
The election of Postmasters by the People, thereby
taking from the one-man rower the tremendous engine
of deiiotism, corruption, and inquisition Inch it now
wields,
Tl atwlisrtment of the tecrcvj so much in vogue in th?
administration of onr affairs, and the adoption in its
stead of a frank, manly, and open policy, admitting the
People to a knowiedgeof hat their Agents are doing,
and enabling them to discuss and pass judgement upon
the measures proposed for their benefit ;
Equity and uniformity in the mode of admitting all
new states into the union hereafter, making the same
mles and ratios apply to all alike;
An entire Reform in our present wholesale system cf
squandering the public domain so fraught with evil
consequences in the future; limiting its pre-emption and
sa!e to bona fide settlers, and all grants and distribution
of proceeds, to purposes of education and internal inv
provcineuts ; a policy, the adoption cf which would have
the f fleet practically to exclude Slavery from the Terri
tories, and add immeasurably to the independence, bap
pines, and prosperity of coming generations, by secur
ing in perpetuity, free hornet to free men. and the
blessing of universal education;
Non-interference, fry the Government, with slavery
where it exists as a State Institution, and non- extension
of it into Territories now free Insisting that thcinfln-
cuceof Executive patronaie aud Party discipline shall
no longer be thrown la favor of its perpetuation or pro
pcgatlonln other words, that enr Government shall
cease to be a sievery-extending Government ;
A Liuou of the Combined elements of the Opposition
in a-Droaa national organization for the overthrow of
the present dominant party in IbGO; believing that the
application of its principles, as practically exemplified.
has been fruitful of agitation, discord, and disunion; that
its moral bankruptcy is complete and irretrievable, and
that its continuance in power must, therefore, in the
very nature of things, result in entailing upon us a con
tinued series or calamities, National, Individual, and
Sectional.
In its general course, it will be the aim of the Gazette
ever to be t ouud upon the side of the right, be it the po
pular or the unpopular side; to oppose Favoritism, Mo
nopolies, and Partial Lepislation of every description;
to lend its Aid towards the elevation of the Masses, and
Jo the retaining in their hands the sovereign power in
substance as well as in name ; and to advocate all legi
timate and sajutary reforms tending to our intellectual
and moral, social and political Progress.

Increased expense, labor, and attention will be be
stowed upon these Departments, and wesiopeto render
them, as we be.ieve they have proved heretofore, enti

of Daily Correspondence from Columbus and Indianapo

special dispatches from Washington, which will reach
our readers in advance of the time such news can be
received through any of the Eastern papers. The special
correspondence and dispatches, Congressional and Mis

been a feature uf the highest interest, and we flatter
ourselves has not been approached by any Western jour
nal. To those who sympathize with us in the views wc
have expressed, and desire to aid in their propagation,
thus opening the way for the triumph which we believe
awaits us in the next presidential struggle, we confi
