Two conventions have been held ;

Other men who voted against Chap
man have been hunted out, and held
up to public gaze through Chapman's
paper. Col, Gilmobe and Col. Parkee,
he Register and Receiver at Omaha,
have had a string of 'abusive epithets
dished out to them.' The following we
clip from the Pacific City , Enterprise)
the Editor of which was one' of Chap
man's warmest supporters before r-and
at the election. . Chapman's course ' is
distrusting his best friends : ' . '
Sorry. We regret to see in the col
umns of the 'Nebraskian,' of Septem
ber -nu, an article m some sense re
flecting and certainly ' sneering at Col.
Parker and Col. Gilmore, of the Land
Office at Omaha, evidently for having
voted against Mr. Chapman. Certain
ly no two men in Nebraska stand high
er, or deserve to stand hi ffher, than
these two gentlemen. We .were earn
est supporters cf Mr. Chapman our-'
selves, and regret that our friends, in
the mutations and hurly-burly unccr
tainty of Territorial politics, were sep
arated from us. We regret that we
could not see things alike, but we have
never doubted that they acted (as we
are sure we did) from the'best lights
before them, "from their stand-point
of vision." The exercise of their riht
of suffrage, as private'eitizens, in voting
for Judfre Ferguson, can in no sense
be justification for newspaper ridicule
or public animadversion, and certainly
can do Mr. Chapman no good.
The Financial Crisis.
Our exchanges are still filled with
notices of "failures," "suspensions.
and comments upon the suspension of
the "Ohio Life Insurance and Trust
Company." Some of the prominent
Eastern papers are determined to make
out that institution "ail rirjrht." We
do not entertain a doubt but that itj
in itself is sound ; or suspect that di
rectly any one will loose by.t'te suspen
sion.' But we do believe and think
the whole transaction evinces that its
suspensionwas an agreed occurrence
by which to enable other institutions
of lesser magnitude advantageously to
fail or suspend. We say we believe
this, and think time w'ill show tho cor
rectness of our position.

"We in the Republic have been, and

Several of the poorest people have ciied
of starvation, and many more will die.
Some of our Ministers and their fami

in hastening their decease.' f; This dis
tressing state of things has been com
ing upon us for several years, r
- There are several obvious causes :
-1. There are a number of idle and
worthless persdns in the communities,
who will not work, but are not ashamed
to beg. ,
2. Every emigration from the States
increases the number of this sort of
persons. . They consume a great deal,
and produce nothing. ' -
3. The natives, several years' ago,
lost their rice crop by;al bad'season,
