up to ns. Jjcrgcr asked what was the
fracus. .They said that some men
were trying to take them. Berger asked
them if any one was hurt, they ' said
that one of tiieir.boys was shot. , Ber
ger and I started up towards town, and
went but a short distance and heard
some one groaning, and went into the
brash and saw a man sitting up, went
up to him ,and asked him if he was
hurt ; he said that he was a dead man,
that the negroes had shot hiia twice
and beat him over -the head with a
club. "Vc staid-a few minutes with
him, and Berger went up to town after
a Thysician, earned back in a few min
utes and staid with him till he wa3 dead.
He died in about one hour after we
heard the firing.

Myself and three others went down to
where the negroes were in ambush,
they came cut with, their pistols and
said g d d m hini ghoot him, and
fired, at the same time I got in close
contact with one cf them and knocked
the pistol, our of his hand, and ; shot
him, think I hit' him; he shot at me
three times before I knocked the? pis
tol out of his hands. Think that this
man Myers came to his death by the
hands of these negroes,- did not see
him fall, he was behind me when I went
in the brush.
