"when any settlements, by the erection
of a dwelling house, or cultivation -off
any portion of the land, shall have
been, or, shall bmade, upon the six
teenth thirty-sixth ' sections (which
locations have been reserved by., law
for the purpose, of beinff applicd to the
support of schools in the Territories of
3lmnesota, Kansas andjNcbraka;,and
in the States and Territories hereafter
to be erected out of the same) before
the said sections shall have, been j or
shall be surveyed;, or when such sec
tions have been or may be selected or
occupied as a town site, under and by
virtue of the Act of Congress, approv
ed twenty-third of May, eighteen hun
dred . and forty-four, or reserved j for
public uses before the Survey, then
' other lands' shall be selected by the
proper authorities in : lieu thereof,
' agreeably ,to thepaiovisions of the Act
'of Congress approved twentieth of

Absconded. The inhabitants of this
region' arc-in a peaceful and prosper
ous condition. The mines aro yield
ing fair wages, and the farmers arc
'putting in a large extent of grain. The
grass and vegetation is forward, the
cattle being fat enough for market. -The.
prospect is that a large crop; of
grain will be raised this season, adding
to butter. and cattle, which have hither
to been their principal exports, and
that of flour also. . : :
Thcro was a recent fall of snow on
the mountains to the depth of six feet.
- A"report was prevalent in the valley
to the effect that a serious desertion
hftd arisen among the Saints at Salt
Late City." It is said that Brigham
Y'oung has been "compelled to fleo the
city, to save himself from the fury of
