Der Ein- zug der Rcgicrungstruppen in Leip. zig beweist, daß Reichswehrnlinister Noske mit den Spartakcrn oüs räumt. Leipzig war der letzte starke Wall der Spartnker. Letztere waren durch das Erscheinen der Negiö rungstruppcn in Leipzig vollständig überrascht. Noske hat gegenwärtig genügend Truppen um sich versam melt, um die Spnrtaker zu schlagen, wo er sie findet. Marz eines natur j lichcn Todes starb, da blieb ein gro ßer Teil seiner Arbeitsaufgabe un erledigt. Jetzt hat der Präsident den sechsundseDzigsten Kongreß zu einer Extrasession auf den 19. Mai zu smnmcngenlfen, und nun dürfen wir hoffen, daß in naher Zukunft die Lebens interesscn des Volkes der Ver einigten Staaten, die einen Aufschub erleiden mußten, weil elf Wochen lang die Völkcrliga unter Diskussion stand, sich wieder der nötigen Auf merkfanikcit erfreuen werden. Man wird fich erinnern, daß bei der Vcr tagung des Kongresses vor mehr als zwei Monaten die Geschäfte der Na tion in schrecklich verwirrtem Zustan de blieben, 'und das hatte seinen Grund in der bochgradigen Aufre gung, in die die Wtttglicdcr des 5!on gresscs durch eben diese Völkerliga versetzt waren. So erreichte denn die Session ihr Ende in einer Ge setzgebungsblockade, die den Fall von Maßnahmen bedingte, welche von dringlicher Wichtigkeit waren. Unter normalen Verhältnissen wäre der Kongreß prompt zu einer Extrasessi on zusammengerufen worden, um das Versäumnis gutzumachen und den Ncgierungsgeschäftcn einen un unterbrochenen Fortgang zu gcstat- ten. Aber das war diesmal nicht der Fall. Der Präsident hatte mit der Friedcnskonserenz zu tun und er Aufgabe zu unterziehen, den wenig zufriedenstellenden Entwurfs der Völkcrliga in eine mehr annchm bare Form zu bringen. So erlitt natürlich die Gesetzgebung Schliff, bruch und das Land mußte schen. wie es mit den Verhältnissen fer tig wurde, bis sich die Friedensdele gaten auf die Völkerliga geeinigt hatten. Der Friede hat wahrlich ebenso Opfer zu bringen wie der Krieg. Unter den gesetzlichen Ml nahmen, die an dein Felsen der Völ kcrliga Schiffbruch erlitten, befinden sich die folgenden: die Vewillias Vorlage für die Armee mir $1,070. 500,000, für Ackerbau mit 831, 673.000. für den Distrikt Columbia mit $14,093,000, für die Marine mit 4720.793,000? für verschiedene Zivilverwaltungszwecke mit $851,, 171,000, für unzulängliche Bewil ligungen mit $26,937,000, für Ei senbahnvcrwaltung mit $750,000,. 000, für Verwaltung der Indianer ongclegenheiten mit $11,066,000. Die Bewilligungen in den meisten dieser Vorlagen, welche die hübsche iimme von $3,476,233.000 dar- stellen, sind nicht vor dem 1.. Juli. dem Beginn des neuen Fiskaljahres, versugbar und der 5!ongrcß hat ge nau 36 legale Arbeitstage, nm diese vorlagen zum Ge)etz zu machen, be vor das jetzige Fiskaljahr zu Ende geht. Aber diese Tatsache bedeutet mcht, daß die Interessen der Regie rung durch das Versäumnis einer zeitigeren Annahme dieser Vorlagen nicht ungunstigt beeinflußt worden ind. Heer und Marincvorlaaen besonders enthalten Bestimmungen ftir Baupläne, und diese mußten zum Stillstand kommen, da man keine sichere Kenntnis' hatte,, wie der Kongreß sich dazu stellen würde. Durch die Verzögerung endgiltigen Handelns mußte viel vorbereitete Arbeit liegen bleiben. Die Eisen- bahnbeivilligung war eine solche, die oiort zur Veringung gestanden ha ben würde und sie war dringend not wendig, um , die einzelnen Eisen bahnstisteme zu finanzieren nnd ans- zustattcn in Uebereinstimmung mit der Verantwortlichkeit, welche die Regierung denselben gegenüber auf ich genommen hotte. Aber die Vor- age war nicht bewilligt morden und o bedürfte es des ganzen finanziel en Kunstreitens seitens der Lifrn. bahnvcrwaltiing, der . Eisenbahnen elbst, der Banken und der Kriegs- manzkorporation. um über . die Schwierigkeiten hinweg zu, kommen. m der'Kongrei; verhandeln konnte. Das Resultat dieser legislativen Ein teilung haben wir im Distrikt bier direkt zu fülilen bekommen. Die Straßen der Stadt sind seit-mehre- reu Wochen nicht gefegt worden, und der Zustand, in dem sie sich befinden. ist ein beredter Beweis siir die Tat sache. - In der Nochtragsvorlage be fand sich ein Posten von $60.000 für Straßeiireinigung im Distrikt, aber da die Vorlage nickt zur An nähme kam. fiel auch dieser Posten, und die Folge war. daß die ganze TtroßenrcinlaniisiSioree entlassen werden mußte. Der Vereinigte Staaten Zerstörer Edwards" sichtete heute morgens den Durchbrenner etwas neunzig Meilen ostlich von Cape Spcar. Der Ballon wurde später von dem brtti schen Handclsdampfcr Gleit David son, der sich auf dem Wege hierher befindet, geborgen. Uriegstätigkeit des Staates Nebraska Washington. 16. Mai. Wie eine hier angestellte Untersuchung ergab, kann der Staat Nebraska mit Stolz auf seine Kriegstatigkeu zurück, blicken. Von deii ersten vier Kriegs, anleihen der Regierung wurden $178,620,950 oder durchschnittlich etwa $637, 'von jeder Familie Ne braska's gezeichnet. Im Verkauf von Kriegssparmarken nimmt unser Staat unter allen andern die Führung ein, denn hier hat im Durchschnitt jede einzelne Person 821.89 in solchen angelegt. Angaben des GencralAdiutanten des Landes zuiolae Nleloeten Mi 14.KÄ, mnae Leute Nebraska's freiwillig für den Kriegsdienst und, bei der allgemeinen Aushebung wurden weitere 29,807 Mann für die Armee gestellt. Wie viele Ncbraska'er sich der Kricgsma rine angeschlossen haben, ist noch nicht festgestellt, doch durfte auch ihre Zahl nicht geringer sein. Nebraska kann daher mit vollem Recht auf seine Kriegstatigkeu stolz sein Amerikaner in englischer Parade. Kodlenz, " 16, , Mai. General Pcrshina begab, sich gestern nach Frankreich über Luxemburg und wird sich nächste Woche nach London begeben, unk der Feier des Empire Tages m London beizuwohnen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit wird eines der berühmten Ber. Staaten' Regimenter der dritten Armee vor König George Parade machen. teressen des Volkes ignoriert worden sind, während die Völkcrliga den Hauptplatz auf der Bühne einnahm. Wenn der Kongreß am 19. Mai zu sammenkommt, dann sollte er mit aller Entschlossenheit diese zurückge stellten Pflichten in Angriff nchnien. Die Vewilligimgsvorlagen sollten in erster Linie an die Reihe kommen, und dann erst die allgemeine Ge setzgebung. auf welche mehr Zeit ver wendet werden kann. Die erste Wo che wird der Kongreß ziveifellos da- zu gebrauchen, sich zn organisieren, und so wird etwa gerade ein Monat zur Erledigung der Appropriations- vorlagen zur Verfügung stehen. Da sollte keine Zeit vertrödelt iverdcn. , - Hoffentlich imrd die Diskussion in der hiesigen Handelskammer, welche sich mit dem Vorschlag des Herrn Frank M. Low, eine , permanente Ausstellung der 43 Staaten hier ins Leben zu rufen, besaßte, zur Schaf fiing einer aktiven Organisation zur Förderung dieses Projektes sichren. Wie Herr Low ausführte, müßte der erste Schritt zu einem solchen Unternehmen in der Schaffung einer solchen Organisation bestehen, damit das allgemeine Interesse dirigiert und in Aktivität umgesetzt werden kann. Daß die einzelnen Staaten die Errichtung einer solchen perma nenten Ausstellung in Washington mit günstigen Augen ansebcn, .dar über bestellt kaum' ein Zweifel. Die Vorteile, die sich den einzelnen dar bieten, liegen klar auf der Hand und sollte irgend ein Staat die Weisheit einer Bewilligung für diesen Zweck anzweifeln, dann würde das Bei spiel der Staaten, die ihre Ausstel lung hier eröffne,:, ihn bald über zeugen. Die Hauptanstrengnng in jedem Unternehmen dieser Art muß im Anfang gemacht werden, um das Rad mal erst in Bewegung zu sct zeit. Es müssen dann' die ' reckten Leute gesunden werden, die ihre Schultern gegen das Rad stemmen. Diese Vorarbeit sollte in Washing ton und von Washingtoner Geschä'ts leuten getan werden. Da liegt für unsere Handelokammer eine Gele genbeit vor, der Stadt einen wert vollen Dienst zu erweisen. Ckkerad. Der beabsichtigte Flug nach Europa NC'4 glücklich in Trepasfey ange langt? Eingetroffene Wetter berichte melden zunehmende schlechte Witterung auf dem tlantischen Ozean, so daß die Fahrt wohl aber, mals verschoben werden muß. (ebensmittel für die Oesterreicher Wien, 16. ' Captain" Thomas Gregor von der .Jnterab liierten Nahrungsmittelkommission hat eine amerikanische Kommission nach Wien gesandt, um mit östcrrei chischen Fabrikanten Abmachungen zu treffen, für den Erlös ihrer Wa reit Mcbl und Kartoffeln für die Stadt Wien zu kaufen. Dadurch würde Oesterreich in die Lage ge setzt werden, fich selbst Lebensmittel zn sichern, ohne von amerkanischcr Ausfuhr, abhängig zu fein und von amerikanischem Kredit. Captain Gregory hat die Amerikanische Ge sellschaft vom Roten Kreu ersucht, Medizin und Seife nach der Ukraine zu senden, und eine aus Oberstleut nant A. Jones und drei Offizieren bestehende Kommission wird sich dort hin begeben. Sie wird auch dafür Sorge tragen, daß aus der West Ukraine Oel nach Wien gesandt wird. Ferner hat Captain Gregory es er- möglicht, daß trotz der schwierigen Verhältnisse demnächst 20,000 Schweine von Jugo-Slawia nach Wien gesandt werden sollen. Totalverluste der Ver. Staaten Armee WaWngton, 16. Mai. Einer gestern vom Kriegsdepartement ver öffcntlichtcn, verbesserten Aufstellung zufolge wurden während des Völker, nngens in Europa 48,909 Ange hörige der Vereinigten Staaten Ar inec und Marine getötet, während 237,135 Mann Verwundungen ver schiedener Art davon trugen. Früher veröffentlichte Listen, welche diese Zahlen bedeutend höher angaben, er klären sich dadurch, daß viele der Soldaten mehr wie einmal verwüst bet wurden und daß Mannschaften, die in Kriegsgefangenschaft gerieten, häufig unter die Getöteten gezählt wurden, jetzt aber zu ihren Truppen- lörpern zurückgekehrt sind. Tie Ge samtzahl der Kriegsgefangenen be- ier sieh auf 4,431 Mann. Präsident wilson gegen dritten Termin Washington. 16. Mai. Wenn Präsident Wilson nach Amerika, zu rückkehrt, dann wird er eine be stimmte und klare Erkläruiig abge ben, daß er unter keinen Umstün den ein Kandidat zur Wiederwahl ist. Er hat dieses Programm schon ennvorfen und den Mitgliedern des Komitees für auswärtige Angelegen beitc bei einein Tiner mitgeteilt. Er beantwortete Fragen bezüglich der Völkeriiga. Es waren schon mehrfache geheimnisvolle . Andeutung gen darüber gemacht worden, und e hieß jedesmal, daß diese Mit teilungen im Vertrauen gemacht wurden. Präsident Wilson gab seine Gründe an, weshalb er zur Zeit nicht eine Erklärung abgegeben hat. Aus zuverlässiger Quelle ver lautet, daß die deutschen Tclega ten die Kohlenbergwerke im Saar tal ausliefern wollen, jedoch darauf bestehen, daß Deutschland die politi schc Jurisdiktion in jenem Gebiet behält.
