No. 132 südl. 3. Str., in schwachem und aus zwei Beinwunden stark blutendem Zustan de aufgefunden worden. Harald Wheeler, ein Angestellter der Black stone Garage, kam , nach seiner Ga rage zurück und erzählte Templeton, daß er gesehen, wie mehrere Männer versucht hätten, sich des Autos von Herbert Arnstein zu bemächtigen, das vor dessen Heim. 135 nordl. 38 Straße stand. Tarauf telephonierte Templeton der Polizei und bewaff nete sich mit einem Revolver und fuhr mit einem Auto nach der oe treffenden Gegend. Sobald ihn die Kumpanen kommen sahen, nahmen sie in einem Buick Auto, das sie ge stöhlen hatten, Reißaus. Temple ton und Wheeler jagten ihnen nach. und hatten sie bald erreicht. Temple ton forderte die Ausreißer mrf. sich zu ergeben, was sie nicht taten. worauf er zu schießen begann Dann sprangen die Durchbrenner aus dem Auto heraus und entkamen im Dun kel der Nacht. Die Buick Car rollte die abschüssige Straße hinab und kam schließlich zum Stehen. Die Polizi sten suchten dann die Garages jener Gegend ab und fanden heute morgen Barrett m jener Garage. Die Polt zei versticht jetzt, den Eigentümer des Buick Autos festzustellen, denn sie ist überzeugt, daß auch dieses gestohlen war. Der Stratzenbahnfall unter Beratung Die Kontroverse zwischen der Omaha Straßenbahn Co. und ihren Angestellten hinsichtlich der geforder ten Lohnerhöhung wird wahrschein lich Mittwoch, von der Kriegs.Arbei terbehörde in Kansas City in Be ratung gezogen werden. Juli- Drei Armeekorps, jedes von 225.000 bis 250.000 Mann zählend sind in Frankreich gebildet worden. Diese Mitteilung machte heute General stabschef March. In 'diesen drei Jahrzehnten sind rund zwei Millionen Menschen nach Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Jndiana, Illinois, Michigan und Missouri ge wandert, unter Umständen, welche WändcrstrSmungen zu verzeichnen, so grundverschieden von denjenigen spaterer Zeit waren, daß sich die Ge gemvatt kaum noch eine Vorstellung von ihnen machen kann! So schnell kamen diese Zügler, daß es unmöglich war, Wege für sie auszulegen; es war yicht daran zu denken, ihnen irgendwelche Reise und Handels Bequemlichkeiten zu bieten, die als so notwendig für Glück und Gedeihen in einem neuen Lande gelten. Wohl konnten die neuen Bewohner überreichlich Nah rungömittcl in dem jungfräulichen Boden ziehen; ja der Farmer brauchte nur die Hälfte seiner Zeit zu arbeiten, um Getreide und Fleisch für seine Familie in Hülle und Fülle zu gewinnen. Aber diese Bahnbrecher waren gänzlich von den älteren besie delten Teilen des Ostens und Cü dens abgeschnitten. Säbt Wege, die vielleicht von ei ner Siedlung nach einer anderen führten, waren nichts Besseres als schmale Büffclpfade oder Indianer fährten. Die alten sogenannten Mi litärstraßen, die nach einigen Teilen des näheren 'Westens gingen, waren erst so zerrissen und durch niederge stürzte Bäume so versperrt, daß es fast unmöglich war, mit ' beladene Wagen über ein Gebirge zu kommen. Trotz der ungchmren Schwierig keiten mußten die ersten Siedler ihr äußerstes tun, um gewisse unbedingt notwendigen Dinge von der entlege nen Außenwelt irgendivie beizuschaf fen, wie Salz, 'Gewürze, Kattun zeuge, Eisen usw. Bis zum Vertrag mit Spanien (1794) konnten die Siedler noch nicht einmal den Mississippi hinab gehen, unl Handel zu treiben. Nach her bewegte sich ine Menge Flöße, 'Archen und Barken dsn Ohio und den' Mississippi hinab bis nach Neiv Orleans, Es war nicht so sckzwer, die Erzeugnisse der Siedler so weit zu bringen: aber es war sehr langwie rige Arbeit, die Boote wieder ström aufwärts zu befördern, und mitunter erforderte die Rundfahrt ein ganzes Jahrl Daher war es oft vorteilhaf ter, die Boote in der Halbmondstadt als altes Holz zu verkaufen und auf Schusters Rappen die vielleicht 1500 Meilen heimzustreben, sich aber die bedurften Waren von Baltimore oder Philadelphia aus mittels Packpfer den senden zu lassen. Besonders die Stadt der Bruderliebe pjlegt schon früh diesen Handel eifrig, wenigstens nach gewissen Zwischenstädten,, von wo Packreiter sie nach Pittburg wei terbeförderten, an Steile dr vchsr verwendeten Coiiestogawagsn.
