Vier Jahre lang var er dann Späher und Führer on Regierungstruppen in deren kämpf gegen die Indianer. Den Kamen Buffalo Bill erhielt er, als :r innerhalb 18 Monaten 4280 Süffel zur Strecke brachte. Diese Zeiswng brachte er teils im Jahre 1867, teils in 1868 zustande. Er ersorgte die Streckenarbeiter an der Zansas Pacific Bahn mit Fleisch, Zn den Jahren 1868 bis 1872 nente er den amerikanischen Truppen Men die Cheyenne und Siou? In naner als Späher; dieselben hatten ich erhoben und eine Menge Mord aten verübt. Den Grostfürsten Zllexis, einem Onkel des letzigen Zaren, begleitete er als Führer auf yxt Buneliagd und wurde von die, 'ein reich beschenkt. Der Indianer 'rieg im Jahre 1876 brachte Buffalo öill wieder in den Regierungsdiemt. zn diesem Jndianeraufstand tötete 5uffalo Bül den Indianerhäuptling Jellow Hand. Zu Anfang der siebziger Jahre vurde Buffalo Bill in die Legis itur erwählt, blieb aber nur wem ze Tage in der Gesetzgebung, da ihm )as Salär von $4 pro Tag nicht ge .mg war. Im Jahre 1883 gründete er seine Wild West Sbow" und bereiste mit )ersclben von Columbus, Nebr., aus e Ver. Staaten, ging auch nach Europa und hat dort vor allen ge. .roiuen .Häuptern Zoritellungen ge zeben. Bei North Platte, Nebr., besaß miftalo Bill eine gewaltige Mutter ftanch, die ober kürzlich verkauft 2iurde. Er besaß ferner mehrere Hotels in Wiioining und - großes Irundeigcntum im Big Horn Tal, Cody war Mitglied der Omaha Zöge des Ordens 'der Elks. Die neuenvählte Stadtverwaltung von Umatilla. welche mit Ausnahme von zwei Stadtratsmitgliedern durchweg aus Frauen besteht, wurde heute eingesetzt. Obwohl die Erfindung des Streich Holzes erst etwa hundert Jahre zu rüadatiert, sieht es sich jetzt durch die Einfuhrung des elektrisozen Lichtes und der schier unzähligen Muster von Selbstzündern in semer bisherigen Weltherrschaft bedroht. Wenn auch noch geraume Zeit vergehen dürfte, ehe das Streichholz ganz verdräng! sein wird, so muß wenigstens mit einer Möglichkeit dieser Entwicklung gerechnet werden. Haben doch unsere Vorfahren sicher ebensowenig eine Vorstellung davon gehabt, daß ihr, alten Arten , von Feuerzeug einmal völlig überwunden werden würden. wie wir es auch heute für daS Streichholz immer noch als unwahr scheinlich annehmen möchten. Das hundertjährige Jubiläum des Streich Holzes ist übrigens vielleicht nicht ganz zur rechten Zeit begangen wer den. Fischer hat im Journal für Gasbeleuchtung nachgewiesen, daß in Paris schon im Jahre 1805 Versuche mit der Herstellung von Streichhöl. zern aus weißem Phosphor gemacht worden sind. Ueberhaupt sprang das Streichholz nicht so- vollendet hervor wie Athene aus dem Haupte des Zeus. Die älteste Vorrichtung war höchst umständlich. Sie wurde von dem Franzosen Chance! erdacht. Die Hölzchen, die am Ende einen Ueberzug von chlorsaurem Kali und Schwefel oder Zucker besaßen, muß ten dabei in ein Glas gehalten wer den, das mit einer Masse von Asbest, in Schwefelsäure getränkt, angefüllt war. Dabei erfolgte die Entzündung infolge der Reaktion zwischen Salz säure und Schwefel. Man nannte diese Erfindung Jmmersionshölzer, im Gegensatz zu den fast gleichzeitig aufkommenden Reibehölzern. Sie gewann aber nur eine geringe Ver breitung. da es weder angenehm noch unbedenklich war, ein Fläfchchen mit Schwefelsäure bei sich zu tragen. Im Jahre 1SJ2, noch vor den Phosphorzündhölzcrn, - wurde von Jones eine Art von Sicher heitszündhölzern erfunden, deren Zündmasse aus drei Teilen chlor sauren Kalis und einem Teil Schwe selantimon bestand und durch Rei bung zwischen zwei Streifen rauhen Papiers entzündet wurde. Die Phos phorzündhölzer kamen dann 1832 aus eine sichere Grundlage. Ihre allzu leichte Entzundlichkeit wurde durch einen Firnisüberzug gedämpft. Ihre Herstellung war jedoch so gefährlich daß sie in manchen Städten ganz verboten wurde. Nachdem Schrötter 184? den roten Phosphor entdeckt hatte, fand drei Jahre später der Teutsche Böttcher die Formel, die bis aus den heutigen Tag für die Sicherheitszünder maßgebend geblie den ist. Als Larimer vor etwa zivei Wochen den Geldschrank in der Office öffnen wollte, stürzte ein aus einem Regal liegender Revolver herab, wobei sich die Waffe entlud und die Kugel La rimer in das Bein drang. Massenverhaftung. Auf das (Geständnis des wegen Tiebstahls verhafteten Hausmannes Emmct Pearfon von der Großsirma M. E: Smith hin nahm die Po. lizei gestern die Verhaftung von 22 Personen wegen Hehlerei vor. Ge stohlene Waren im Werte von $iQO sind dabei der Polizei in die Hände gefallen und man tiofit, noch mehr zurückerhalten zu können. Der 40 jährige Walter Luckiz er schien gestern im Heim feiner von ihm getrennt ' wohnenden Frau, 2117 Capitol Ave., um ihre drei Kinder zu besuchen. Natürlich gin gen die Herren tüchtig ins Feld, und 1 der Bericht spater wird es lehren. was die Herren getan haben. Ge. gen das Unternehmeil ist durchaus mchts zu sagen. Niemand kann zweien Herren dienen, heißt eS. ES mag viel Wahres daran sein, aber nicht immer verwendbar.
