D zahllosen Gebäude, m denen die Maschinen stampften, die Schwung räder sausten, waren für ihn nur Mittel zum Zwecke sie brachten Unsummen ein. das Heer der Arbei ter dagegen ein notwendige, Uebel. Er befand sich in einem seltsamen Zwiespalt und konnte sich nicht klar darüber werden, ob er sich über sei neS Vaters schneidenden Hohn är gern, oder sich über die fünf Frei heitsjahre freuen solle. Allerdings fiel ein bitterer Drop fen in seinen Freudenbecher der bevorstehende Abschied von seiner Mutter, die ihn vor knapp bierund zwanzig Stunden voll Wiedersehens glück in die Arme geschlossen. Erst nach langen Monaten sollte ihm die Erkenntnis kommen, wie bitter er sie enttäuscht hat. ( i Al, ihn wenige. Stunden später der Schnellzug nach der Riesenstadt trug, verfolgte ihn das tiefiraurige Gesicht feiner Mutter. Die Oper war bereits bis zum dritten Akte gediehen, in wcl chem die Sängerin eines ihrer Lieb' lingslieder einlegte. Drei Zugaben hatte sie bereits beillit und kam eben, um noch einmal dem Wunsche ihrer Zuhörer nachzugeben, als Hi! ling eintrat. Mit etrnas verächt!! chem Lächeln musterte er das Publi kum, welches die Primadonna bei ihrem erneuten Erscheinen stürmisch begrüßte. Der Kapellmeister hob fei neu Taktstock und sofort trat tiefe Stille ein. Leise finden die Geigen an, eine wunderbar füße Einleitung zu spielen und dann setzte die Herr licht Stimme zu jenem Liede ,Su wanee River" ein, das keiner der, gessen kann, der e, einmal ge hört. Wie der Wind durch die Blätter der Waldbäume rauscht, so ging ein Rauschen durch die Reihen der Zuhörer; lächelnd hob die Diva die Hand und es ward ruhig. Hilling hatte den ganzen Vor gang verzerrten Angesichts beobach tet und hatte dann die Sängerin begann hinreißend die letzte Zeile des Liedes .Weit fort von den Alten daheim", zum Entsetzen des ganzen Publikums, in den rührenden Refrain prodierend eingestimmt. j Die Sängerin brach sofort ab, da. Orchester geriet in Verwirrung und Hunderte von Menschen wandten sich voller Entrüstung nach dem Stören friede. Dieser aber blieb kaltblütig stehen und erwiderte die Zornesblicke mit einem unbeschreiblich imperh nenten Lächeln, dann verließ er auf lachend das Theater, setzte sich kn sein Automobil und fuhr nach sei- nem Klub. Tort ging er voo Saal zu Saal, störte jeden der ihm be kannten Herren durch sein laute? La chen, Singen und Sprechen und trank zwischendurch wie ein Ver schmachtender und geriet schließlich in einen solchen Zustand von Wut, daß zwei seiner Universiiatsfreunde, die zufällig im Hause waren, ihn nach seiner Wohnung brachten. Nur mit Muhe konnte er bewogen wer den. sich auszukleiden und ins Bett legen zu lassen, aber Ruhe fand er nicht immer und immer wieder holte er den Refrain des Liedes und schließlich verdichteten sich die Worte zu einem einzigen Heim". Mit Tagesanbruch stand er aus, kleidete sich an und bestellte sein Au to, um ohne Chauffeur eine lange Fahrt zu machen. . Stundenlang trieb ihn die Unruhe durch friedliche Dörfer, über Berg und Tal, einmal in rasender Jagd, dann wieder im Schneckentempo, aber beständig ver folgt von dem Liede, daS er so rauh unterbrochen hatte. Als die Primadonna am Abend desselben Tages in der berühmten Szene deS dritten Aktes wieder auf rat, saß Hilling allein im Hinter- arund einer Loge. Mit brennenden Augen lehnte er sich vor, als wolle er mit allen Sinnen die Melodie in ich aufnehmen, die ihn seit vierund zwanzig Stunden keinen Augenblick verlassen. Weicher und süßer klang die herrliche Stimme, eine so tiefe Sehnsucht, ein so grenzenloses Heim weh, eine unsägliche Trauer offen barte sich darin, daß Hilling sich die Nägel in die Handflächen bohrte, um nicht laut aufschluchzen zu müssen. Des Vaters Gesicht ward hart wie ein Stein. .WaS geht Dich der Zustand mei ner Leute an?" Sehr diel. Deine Arbeiter sind musterhaft in ihrer Pflichterfüllung, treu, cnbänalich und loyal. Sie be reichern Dich, ohne selbst einen Vor teil davon zu haben. Sie werden überangestrengt und nicht genügend bezahlt. Ich muß das am bestcn wissen, denn ich bin einer der Jh ren." Einer der Ihren?" wiederholte der alte Hilling Köchlichst erstaunt, was soll das heißen?" Die Wahrheit! Seit zwei Ja? ren arbeite ich draußen in den Werk statten, nachdem ich auf der aller untersten Stufe angefangen. Ich weiß also genau, was ich will." Abermals ruhte des Vate:- Blick lange und prüfend auf dem Gesicht, seines Sohnes. WaS er in den ernsten männlichen Zügen las, muß te wohl erfreulich sein, denn lana sam wich der finstere Grimm einem freundlichen Lächeln. Du hast aber meinem Befehle. fünf Jahre lang fort zu bleiben, zu wider gehandelt. Davon möchte ich jetzt nicht svre chen." Aber ich um so mehr." bestand der Vater hartnäckig. Gut denn: ich gehorchte Dir ge rade zwei Jahre, dann aber packte mich die Sehnsucht nach Mutter und Heimat und ja nach Arbeit." Und weiß Mutter " Ja, sie wußte all' die Zeit dar um. Aber davon später. Jetzt will ich erst die Angelegenheit mit den Arbeitern erledigen." Alles zu seiner Zeit; zuerst will ich wissen, ob Du wirklich da drau ßen zwei Jahre lang als gewöhnli cher Arbeiter geschafft hast." Schweigend hielt der junge Mann dem Alten die fchwieligen. geschwärz ten Hände hin. Dann fragte r?er Vater mit undurchdringlichem AuS druck im Gesichte: Und Du bist da überzeugt der Notwendigkeit gründlicher formen da draußen?" Ja. Aufgeregt blickte er sich um. ob ihn Jemand beobachtete, lief; dann ganz unauf fällig seinen Handschuh fallen direkt auf das Goldstück hob den Handschuh ebenfalls ganz unauffäl 'ig aus.... oder, o Pech, das old stück hatte er nicht erwischt. Er wie derholte daS Manöver mit demselben negativen Erfolg, und gerade als er's zum dritten Male versuchen wollte, kam ein Herr auf ihn zu und sagte: Darf ich Ihnen vielleicht ine Flasche unseres vorzüglichen flüssigen Leims anbieten?
