Der deutsche Botschafter in Washington. Graf Bernstorsf. war hier Ehren gast auf dem Bankett, das anläß lich des 101. Geburtstages des Märtlirer-Präsidcnten Lincoln von der Lincoln Ccntennial Association gegeben wurde. Ihm war eö vor behalten, die HaM'trede des Tages zu halten und als Thema behandelte cr Abraham Lincoln, wie er von den Teutschen betrachtet wird." Er wies nach, wie vortrefflich die Teutschen den Charakter Lincoln's zu würdigen verstanden und bewies an Hand ausgezeichneter Autorita ten. welch starkes Band wahrer Freundschaft die gemeinsanun In Interessen der Ver. Staaten und Deutschlands zu Lincoln's Zeiten umschlungen hielt. Zum Schlüsse sagte cr mit Wärme, daß diese Freundschaft immer bestehen möch te. Graf Bernstorsf erwähnte, daß Lincoln's Muth und sein edles Herz, das mit jeder Faser dem Volke entgegenschlug, in den Ge fühlen der Teutschen ein Echo ge sunden hätten. Er war ein gebore ner Führer, er war in Wahrheit ein Retter dieses Landes. Der Graf erklärte, daß er von der American Sanitary Commis sion eine Statistik erhalten habe, wonach sich 187.153 im alten Va terland geborene Ductsche in den Nrihcn der Nördlichen awvcrbcn ließen, um 'für die Erhaltung der Union zu streiten; kam dann auf den unvergleichlichen Schriftsteller und Diplomaten George Bancroft zu sprechen, der in seiner Eigen schaft als Vertreter der Ver. Staa ten in Berlin sich dieJreundschaft solcher Männer wie , Vismarck ind, Moltke erworben hatte. Gelegent lich der Inauguration Lincoln's veranstaltete Bancroft in Berlin ein Festessen, in dessen Verlauf auch Bismarck eine Rede hielt, in welcher er wörtlich sagte: Hinsichtlich der Beziehungen der beiden Länder (Preußen und Amerika) bereitet es mir daS größte Vergnügen, sagen w können, daß seit den ?i7en Friedrich des Großen -und Wafli ' AYrx'p : r ki f MdHALmEfik LA .anh -- Die von General Diaz gegen daZ Regime Madero's angezettelte Re volutioit hat bisher große Erfolge auszuweisen gehabt. Er hat sich in dem Arsenal stark befestigt und Madero ist es nicht gelungen, ihn aus dem festungartigen Gebäude zu vertreiben. Wie vernichtend der Straßenkampf gewesen sein muß, kann man aiiö den vielen Gebäuden ersehen, die durch das fürchterliche Bombardement beschädigt ,und zum Theil zerstört wurden. Die Baukosten werden sich auf $50, 000 stellen. In Lincoln starb Frau Jennie Wolf von Syracuie im Alter von C2 Jahren. Ihr Gatte und sieben Kinoer überleben die Verstorbene. Feuerwehrchef M. Febr. Das Hans komite für Abänderung der Konsti-' lution empfahl einstimmig die Ali-. nahine jener Gesetzvorlage, in wel cher Frauenstimmrecht im Staate vorgesehen ist. Die Bill betressö Abhaltung iner Konvention zwecks Abänderung der Staatökonventioll wurde ohne Empfehlung der Ge-, eral File" überwiesen. Im Hause ' empfahl Repräsentant Hubbaro, Adams, Lincoln's Geburtstag zu ei nem Feiertag zu erheben. Von ver schiedener Seite wurden Emwcndun. gen unter dem Vorgeben erhoben, daß wir bereits genier gesetzliche Feiertage hätten; Hubbard's (riii pfehlung aber wurde trotzdem mit großer Mehrheit angenommen. Tcr , Eonunercial Club von Lincoln er suchte das Senatskoinite, die Bahn Gesellschaften nicht durch Annahme , widersinniger Gesetze zu vergewal tigen; dieselben seien existenzberech tigt. Alle diesbezüglichen ringe brachtcnVorlagcn sollten der Staats Eisenbahnbehörde zur Begutachtung vorgelegt werden, denn dazu sei diese doch schließlich da. Die Bill, welche die Erhöhung der Mcilengcbühren der Sheriffs wn , 2 auf 10 Cents die Meile vorsieht, , wurde zur Annahme empfohlen. Im Senat wurden nachstehende , Bills angenommen: Zuchthausstrafe, für Diejenigen, welche Gelder von Arbeiterorganisationen unterschla gen; Anstellung eines Hülfs-Staatö , ingenicurs, der sich 'ganz und gar' der Jrrigationsarbeit widmen soll: , das Salär desselben beträgt $1800 das Jahr. Die Omaha Wasser-wcrks-Bill wurde zur Annahme em pfohlen. Derselben gemäß soll der General Geschäftsführer feine ganze -Zeih seinem , Berufe widmen - und . für ' feine Arbeit ein Jahresgehait' von $5000 beziehen. Der Zusatz, daß der städtische Schatzmeister für ; Verwalter der Gelder der Wasser Werksbehörde einen Zuschuß von jährlich $000 erhalten soll, wurde gestrichen, indessen der Bill das Amendment einverleibt, wonach es keiner anderen Gesellschaft gestattet werden soll, auf ihrem eigenen , Grund und Boden Brunnen und Pumpstationen anzulegen. Dieser , Passus ist gegen die Süd-Omaha Stock Fards gerichtet. ' Im Haus wurde die allgemeine Vewilligungs'Bill, welche die Ge hälter der Staatsangestelltcn ein- , schließt, angenommen und vom Gou verneur gut geheißen. Dieselbe schreibt insgesammt die Summe von ,, $883,200 vor. Das Gesuch, dem ' Bureau des Arbeiterkommissärs , mehr Beamte zur Verfügung zu . stellen und das Gehalt des Arbeiter kommissärs zu erhöhen, wurde ab- -fchlägig beschicken.
