- V -Xtlf Hjr" OCTOBER, 1018 .TU a ne Commoner 15 A Convert to Liberty When I left Germany I was 20 years old. I obtained military leavo of absence for one year. That leave was extended for four yeara. That was the limit. Every German must serve his time wneu no i j old. Nothing can change that. But meantime, I nad settled and married an American girl. Needless to say, Glerman military service did not interest me Very much. Two weeks after my 25th' birthday I re ceived a formidable looking docu ment from the military commander of Berlin. It ,was my notification that the tlay after 1 was expected to report for service I had been duly tried by courtmartial on a charge of absence without leave. The military court had found me guilty and im posed a sentence of 16 days in a military fortress, with the alternative of a fine of 1G0 marks. I was to present myself immediately for duty. When war was declared In 1914 I again received a memorial, with the royal seal of blue &hd wh'te eagle. This time I was informed that if I reported without delay to the nearest military authority royal amnesty would be granted to me. I have reported for duty to tlie war department of the United States; and I hope that a place will be found for me somewhere. The German system is everywhere; it concerns itself with everything; it works at all 'times. If the system decides that f rightfulness it, the proper procedure, then nothing is per mitted to stand in 'the' way of execu-. tion or orders. The cries oE staubed non combatants are horrible to the ears of a German soldier; but more hor rible is the general's wrstth. The German loves his family. He is good to his wife, and his children are dear, to him. If you call him a hun, a barbarian, you misunder stand him. Ho is a human being; more "sentimental, more idealistic than most of you. But carved into his brain, into his heart, into his soul, are tho words that mean more to him than the Ten Commandments: With God, for king and fatherland! That is what America is fighting for, to replace those words with the three others Liberty! Equality! Fraternity! This was indicated tonight by members of the committee after in formation obtained by the army in telligence service had been submitted to the committee in executive ses- LsIqii.
