A volcanic eruption occurring at
Kagoshima in Japan on January 13,
caused as much loss of life as the
celebrated eruption of Vesuvius,
which destroyed the ancient Roman
towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Kagoshlrna, with a population of

covered with ashes, as was also the
adjacent island Sakura, containing
