tion" of the powder trust, dividing
it into three companies.
The charges against William S.
Edwards, for offering bribes to mem
bers of the West Virginia legisla
ture, has been dismissed.
Governor Dunne of Illinois, has
suggested that the legislature com
bine and elect Col. J. H. Lewis,
democrat, and L. Y. Sherman, re
publican, to the senate.
Judge Nathan Goff, republican,
was ejected United States senator
from West Virginia, to succeed
Clarence W. Watson, whose term ex
pires March 4th. Mr. Goff was sec
retary of the navy in President
Hayes' cabinet.
An Albany, N. Y dispatch says:
Charles D. Hilles, of Dobbs Ferry,
secretary to President Taft and
chairman of the republican national
committee, was appointed by Gover
nor Sulzer as a member of the board
of managers of the New York state
training- school for girls at Hudson.
"Mr. Hilles," said Governor Sul
zer, "is a resident of Westchester
county and would like to do some
thing for the state along charitable
and philanthropic lines. Hence I
thought he was just the man to ap
point to the position." When Mr.
Hilles' nomination was received in
the senate, Majority Leader Wagner
moved its immediate confirmation
which was granted.
"In view not only of the distinc
tion Mr. Hilles has gained as one of
the citizens of this state," said
Senator Wagner, "but also because
of the very valued and valiant ser
vice he rendered the democratic
party in the "last campaign, I move
his immediate confirmation."

affirming a judgment for $47 ob
tained by Reginald DeM. Wentworth
against Leon G. Riggs, a restaurant
keeper, for the loss of an overcoat.

problems before the American
people. Ho has lately been por
trayed as likely to be insistent upon
occupying a place in the cabinet of
the next president, of the United
States. Against that imaginative
attitude It will be well to place the
following comment by Mr. Bryan In
The Commoner:
"Cabinet positions ought not to be
regarded as currency with which to
pay debts. They are responsible
positions and in filling them the
president-elect should look to the fu
ture and not to the past. A public
official has no right to discharge
political obligations at the expense
of the public. The men selected by
Mr. Wilson for the cabinet should be
selected, not because of personal
service rendered to him, nor even be
cause of past service rendered to the
party. Tho individual counts for
little; the cause counts for much.

ism and wise philosophy ia that,
and th writer of it practices what
he preaches. Those who know Mr.
Bryan at all well will be sure that
he has not been knocking at Wood
row Wilson's door with any demand
for place. It may also be doubted
whether he believes that his unques
tioned power to influence public
opinion would be enhanced by any
position within the gift of the com
ing president.
