State Journal: Mr. Bryan is probably to be saved tho mortification of going to the national convention by a smaller vote than Senator Hitchcock gets. Mr. Hitchcock's big lead in Douglas county made him high man In tho returns accumulated during the first five or six days following the primary. Returns from tho country steadily cut down this lead nntil now Mr. Bryan has passed Mr. Hitchcock and promises to havo a considerable lead by tho time all votes aro counted. By another two years the liquor issue will have still further faded from party politics. Mr. Bryan's leader hip in his own state will then bo indisputable. Lincoln (Neb.) Evening News: Notwith standing tho liquor interests of the state, aided and abetted by tho slate machine, Senator Hitchcock and Mayor Dahlman fought openly nnd to tho best of their ability against tho selection of Mr. Bryan as a delegate at large from Nebraska, that great leader goes to Balti more with a certificate of election, and that certificate is backed by tho highest vote re ceived of any of the candidates for delegate-at-largo. Mr. Hitchcock will also be a member of the delegation, but it will be largely because 1 , tiromendoUB voto the special interest with which ho consorts in politics -tho brewers puvo him in Omaha and other centers where their strength lies. Mr. Hitchcock has mani fested symptoms in recent years of having im bibed the idoa that ho himself was the big man in Nebraska politics, and it is quite possible that tho demonstration just given him to tho contrary will havo a chastening effect upon him EVERY INCH A PRIEST Special dispatch to tho Cincinnati Enquirer New York April-22. Winnowed from among many pathetic stories of the Titanic catastrophe today was a tale of two clergymen who went down with tho Titanic while ministering to the Stricken passengers. One of tho clergymen was Uev. Thomas R. D. Byles, of Westminster pariah! London, who was on his way to officiate at tho marriage of his brother in Brooklyn, and to other a German priest whose name is unknown; Father Byles was in tho first cabin and the German priest in tho steerage. Both ministers had celebrated mass in tho steerage Sundav woming The story of their deaths was related today by three women survivors of the Titanic Ellen Mocklaro, Bertha Moran and Miss McCoy. Foreign Post. 5c Extra, vv,t uuttt uuu saYQ JUmgQjll rzmmm&Slm&SttVSr.zsi A Colorado Boy's Good Bryan Messiner, a sixteen-year-old Colorado boy, has demonstrated at an early age that ho possesses the first quality of success the ability to "hustle." Besides, he has shown the possi bilities open to workers, young and old, in spreading tho doctrines of good government among the voters. In a recent letter to The Commoner, Mr. F. S. Rockefeller of Colorado, writes: "Under date of February 6 I received a let ter from you asking me to send you five sub scriptions at the campaign rate of 50c a year. I was at that time and since then have been too sick to attend to the matter. However, I have a nephew (Bryan Messiner), who is sixteen years old. He was born in Colorado during the campaign of 189G and his father being an ad mirer of Mr. W. .J. Bryan, gave his son the name of Bryan. I told my nephew he was under obligations to extend the usefulness of The Commoner. He started out and at the end of three days, or rather evenings, he came in and dumped down $18.00 to pay for the enclosed list of subscribers." This is an excellent record for anyone, but more especially commendable in a boy of this age. Bryan Messiner can not vote for several years yet; in fact, he will not -be able to cast his first vote for president until 1920, but the work that he has done, and the work that he will do in the future, will perhaps be just as effective for the cause of good government as if he could cast a hundred or even a thousand votes himself. Considering his interest in poli tical questions at his age, there is no doubt that when he comes to cast his first vote he will be thoroughly equipped to discharge every duty as an American citizen in the most intelligent manner. When Bryan Messiner's club was formed the campaign rate for The Commoner was 50c. He therefore placed The Commoner into the hands of thirty-six voters. Since then the campaign rate has been reduced to 35 cents, or three sub scriptions for $-1. At the new rate, such a club would place The Commoner into the hands of fifty-four voters. This illustrates what effec tive work can be done in this campaign, and shows how easy it is to reach a large number of voters in each precinct by getting up Commoner clubs. . A change of just a few votes in each precinct will often change the entire result in a county or state. The Commoner's special campaign rate of 35 cents on new subscriptions or 3 NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS for $1 will enable the workers in every precinct to put good campaign literature into the hands of every new and doubtful voter from now until the close of the campaign. This work should be done early before the voters are deluged with tons of mis leading campaign literature. Form a club in your precinct. Interest the young boys in the workt and make an effort to build up your party's strength in your own community. The attached coupon can be used for a club of three new subscribers, but the form may be copied on blank paper where a larger list of names is sent. Many clubs are coming in from all sec tions of the country. Add your precinct to the rapidly growing list.
